Description
I was kinda planning on working this some more but there's so much going on and I've returned to the file so many times I figured it was time to post. Each time I opened it I felt like I was starting over, and the formula wasn't too friendly either. I finally got to a point I liked and figured it was time to stick a fork in it.Yes, it's a spiral, get over it. Why say that? Fractals are digital recreations of patterns found in nature through the use of complex math formulas. There is no other pattern found in nature as common as the spiral. If you are going to be a fractal artist, the spiral should be part of your genetic composition. Some people can't stand them though. To that I say embrace the essence of the artform and cherish the history of what has come before. Spirals are a fundamental part of the medium and I love them, especially when you feel you've done something new with an old friend.
Created with Ultra Fractal from beginning to end.

This is in no way an insult, because I really like this spiral, but the black and white makes me think of a scene in Beetlejuice with the staircase.

An awesome and striking spiral. I particularly like the detail, perspective and texture.

Thanks. I was going for obsidian type textures. Not sure if I got there but the b/w helped.

Looks "obsidian" to me. My pleasure.

Love the subtle textures here and how the black and white seem to draw it out. Great spiral shape with lots going on. Well presented.

Actually, I was thinking of you a bit when making this. I remember you posting a description about "another spiral" on one of your better ones.

First off I like spirals, always have, it looks like slices layered over each other creating a curl. I also like B&W images so this is a for me

Spirals are cool, just gotta work harder to make them unique.

Your right. Spirals need to have a unique look to them.
Da Bearssss!! This team is going to be underestimated by the media. This makes for good motivational fodder for Lovie to use in his ramping up to the big game.

I tend to hate them when i make them now to, but once in a while, one stands out and begs to be kept alive. I personally find this one intresting because of the repeated turbulance texture wrapping around it.

I'm embracing the spiral but certainly not the math formula the creates them, lol!

Full view is fantastic, it shows every detail of the texture and lightplay. Great decision to black-and-white it. Spirals are fascinating and the great challenge is to do something new with them. Great work.

When I was an admin for *Ultra-Fractal one of the first contests we ran was spirals. It was really cool seeing people push them to new limits with such diverse techniques.

Looks like polished galvanized metal on the edges I like the black and white, the pattern takes centre stage that way.

Thanks. Framing was difficult because the pattern repeats in really strange ways. It was actually this pattern that emerged when zoomed in a certain way.

Good eye, it was based upon individual plates that covered each other. The rest is texture and lighting to get the depth.

I really like that you used B&W here. Not too many digital artists produce B&W works, which is a shame.

Aeires In reply to LawrenceDeDark [2006-12-21 18:45:15 +0000 UTC]
I threw a lot of colors at it and it never seemed to have enough life until I went b/w. I agree though, but I think it's trickier when you take away the spectrum of colors, you have to rely more on lighting and textures which some people don't like to do.

I like how this goes rather 3D on you while your eyes slide over the surfaces presented. Definitely not "just black and white".

Aeires In reply to keight [2006-12-21 18:42:24 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for noticing that. The overall shape was extremely flat so I focused a lot of attention on adjusting colors to give it more depth by tricking the lighting of it all.
