Description

This tutorial accompanies my honey badger drawing. It's a good place to start if you're new to fur. Rough, coarse fur has less 3D structure - it doesn't form clumps or locks, like you see in humans or wolves. The fur still has a direction, but there's a lot of randomness to the individual hairs, particularly in the light hair on the back. The brown leg and belly fur is slightly smoother, but it's short enough that it goes in a consistent direction so you still don't have to worry about clumps.

I also cover how to use an exacto knife. It's a useful tool, it just takes a bit of practice to get the feel of it. Try on scrap paper first.

I have a Skillshare class on realistic drawing. It covers the basics for beginners and tips for experienced artists. I do three drawings to demonstrate freehand sketching, shading and using colour pencils. I also talk about how to approach drawing long term, deal with failure and practice to improve. I give you ways to identify your weaknesses and good practice exercises so you can improve them. I spent three months writing, filming and editing my class because I wanted it to be as helpful and clear as possible.

The full 1 hour class is linked here: www.skillshare.com/classes/Rea…
