Description
I wanted to show you the step by step process of a watercolor painting. Prismacolor pencils were used as well!

About half a roll of artist tape was gone though with this tutorial, because I had to keep scanning it in as I went. Watercolor paper buckles if you don't keep it strapped down onto a hard surface.

If you have any questions please ask! Enjoy!

And I'd like to mention you draw the prettiest shoulders

Woot! Tutorials take so much time, but they're worth it!
Ok go to your local crafts store-mine is hobby lobby-and you'll find artists tape. It's usually blue in color, and it won't tear your paper when you pull it loose. OMG I did that once-tore my paper-because I used some crap tape. Go the safe route and save yourself some trouble

Regular masking tape is usually pretty good if you pull it off slowly. It's always served me well, anyway

Ew, I did that when I first started... You'll still pull some of the edges off, but usually only stuff that was under the tape anyway.

I didn\'t know I was supposed to tape it down. Thanks. Is there a certain kind of tape to use?

Aikya In reply to ElvenDeathMarch [2008-05-28 21:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Hey thanks for asking-have you ever heard of artist tape? It's a clean release tape-so you won't tear your paper-that you can get at hobby lobby or even hardware stores. Mine is blue in color. I used it also to paint my brother's room, it's really awesome

I haven't heard of it, but it sounds good.
I kinda had one more question and I know it may a dumb one, but I've been wondering about it. Um, is there a certain kind of paper to use? Cause I've heard some people say that and I'm not sure.

shannonlauriston In reply to ElvenDeathMarch [2008-09-15 20:31:30 +0000 UTC]

Masking tape works well too, just pull off the tape at a 45 degree angle not 90 degree, and usually it won't tear. The tape Aikya called "artist tape" is also known as painter's tape, and like Aikya said, can be found at hardware stores. The only colours I've ever seen it in are blue and green

Aikya In reply to ElvenDeathMarch [2008-06-03 03:11:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes-you want to use a high pound paper. I use 185 lb. cold press acrylic paper. You can get specific watercolor paper. The higher the pound, the thicker the paper. The lower the pound the more likely it is to buckle, but how much water you use also comes into play. If you use more paint and less water then you won't have to worry about buckling as much.

Ok, Cold press means you are going to have more texture, or 'tooth' to your paper.
Hot press means that it's been smoothed out-which gives you more control if you're working with pencils Cold press absorbs the water and paint quicker. With Hot press you're paint will tend to form in pools until it is absorbed. I learned that by experimentation.

Hope that helps! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions!

What a helpful tutorial! (Interesting subject matter as well.) It\'s always nice to see other people\'s techniques I think

Now if I could just be bothered to apply those techniques instead of rushing into painting with too much enthusiasm... My worst crime is never taping the paper. I don\'t have anywhere to tape it to

Aikya In reply to buraqina [2008-05-28 22:11:51 +0000 UTC]

It's fun when people share their techniques! It's always helped me in the past when I can see the step by step process of a work of art, ESPECIALLY DIGITAL ONES! I'm much better with traditional works

I tape my paper to a Masonite board-we painted on them in high school. Here is the link to a painting I did from my old account. [link]
If anything you can tape the paper to a table, that works really well!

buraqina In reply to Aikya [2008-06-03 20:25:42 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't agree more, plus I just find it really fascinating to get an insight into how other people create their art. Very inspirational!

OMG, my Mum would go bonkers if I taped wet paper to her table and got watercolours all over it I'll have to get myself a piece of old wooden board to work on

Aikya In reply to buraqina [2008-06-04 16:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Rofl! I can see how your mom would be like that-just find a board and you'll be good! Plus you can carry it around with you, like outside if you want to slash color on your paper without making a huge mess. Eh, I spilled black paint on the carpeted part of my bathroom, but luckily I hid it under the rug. Why must there be carpets in the bathroom!?!?!

buraqina In reply to Aikya [2008-06-04 19:59:57 +0000 UTC]

Well that settles it, must definately get myself a board to paint on!

Eeek, that's good you were at least able to hide it under the rug! I once spilt black ink all over the table I was working on and the carpet, but luckily it washed out. God I've never been so relieved as then!

Another thing that works pretty well as an alternative to wood is corrugated cardboard (like they put in calendars to keep them stiff). I learned to use watercolours with cardboard. It's portable, and still sturdy enough provided you don't overload the paper with water

This will help a lot, thanks for making it! But can I ask - it\'s probably a dumb question, as I probably should have it guessed, but what do you use for the details in Step 4? Watercolor paint or pencils?

Aikya In reply to Lumaris [2008-05-28 22:05:43 +0000 UTC]

Awesome-I'm super glad I could help to inspire!
I used watercolors with a round brush on the background for the details. ^^ There is no such thing as a dumb question! XD

Colored pencils are super fun with watercolors-try it out sometime!
