Description
~ Because 99.87% of animes are.~ So are some artists who has dark skin
Maybe it's the fear of not getting exposure?
Which is not true.... skill and fanart gives you exposure!
I am not talking about furries or furry artists. I am not talking about race . This is for the artists who creates human characters with medium to dark shades of skin.
I couldn't find one like it, so I had to create one.
Feel free to use this in your journal, just fave it first.

On a side note, when I created Animosity Sonata, their skin choice came after I had the story laid out. Originally their skin was going to be beet red because of the original color scheme
But they're brown now

I don't think they're afraid to, I just think it's not what they had in mind when they created their animes.

I wonder why that is, perhaps because paleness= privileged status around the world.

I doubt that's it, I'd assume it just didn't fit with their concept at the time.

That makes it easier doesn't it? There is no bias towards dark skinned people in the real world at all.

Well not everyone is biased. People tend to draw what fits the setting of their story or even just what they're used to or like. It's not like every artist/author has some racist agenda or something.

Back when I had several anime/manga series ideas, there were definitely dark skinned characters. (I do recall that at least two were half black/half Japanese and looked sort of like an anime Kimora Lee Simmons, but maybe darker.) Variety is the spice of life.

I love anime, I'll say it, whatever...But I do agree that I think it'd be cool if there were characters with a different skin tone than the usual. I'm white but I've got more than one OC with a darker skin tone. There's nothing wrong with either light or dark skin tones, but variety is nice xD My only thinking may be that sometimes darker skin is harder to color (for me at least...I keep trying though xD I think my only major success was when I used a picture of BeyoncΓ© to select the different colors from xD) so they use lighter skin tones that have already been done a lot. Though, I would think that animation companies would have an easier time with that than someone like me. :/

Very nice stamp
Well, frankly speaking, I used not to create this kind of OCs since there are barely no black people in the place I live - so I didn't feel te need to create them. Now, as my mind is broaded, I think, it's good to have OCs of every race - especially when the universe I make is so varied.

Heheh, I'd rather say, people tend to imagine things based on what they see - in the past, I didn't see black people often, so I wasn't creating this kind of OCs.

The link you posted is broken. Here's the correct posting of the link [link] .
That picture is not more difficult to draw because she has dark skin...it's more difficult to draw because she was drawn in realistic style. All realistic styles (no matter what the race of the person is that you're drawing) are harder to draw than simplified cartoon/anime styles.
For people who only know how to draw in simplified cartoon/anime styles, all they have to do is just draw a character in their normal style, and then just color the skin brown. Boom, that's it--instant dark-skinned character! It's not rocket science at all!

VelCake In reply to BakerChemi [2011-11-26 15:27:12 +0000 UTC]
Well, I still disagree. I have tried doing dark-skinned characters myself, and I can tell they are harder to draw.Maybe our opinions differ because I am a traditional artist and you are digital, but you will notice that is not so easy to find works with dark-skinned characters because they involve more colors and more work on the skin, and not everyone is willing to work on it, me included. skin depth is generally harder to achieve and the darker the skin, the more you will have to work with lights and shadows.
I gave the example of that piece because it is traditional:3 and it is semi-realistic but still manga/anime styled(the feces of the face for example, would be wrong if this piece was realistic).

BakerChemi In reply to VelCake [2011-11-26 18:29:37 +0000 UTC]
The only response I'll give to this is something I've privately wondered about to myself for a long time:
Most people in the world have absolutely no problem at all coloring dark hair, dark eyes, dark anthros, dark monsters, dark creatures, dark chairs, dark tables, dark books, dark balls, dark clothes, etc., etc. But yet somehow, for some really odd reason, coloring dark human skin is the greatest, most supremely, impossibly difficult rocket-science mystery of all time......
Hmmmm....just something to think about.....
>>the feces of the face for example<<
I'm going to assume that you meant "features" instead of "feces"......

VelCake In reply to BakerChemi [2011-11-27 13:23:55 +0000 UTC]
I think you are exaggerating. It feels as if you were inclined to think the only possible reason why one does not make dark-skinned characters is because they have some kind of bias or something. Meh.
Ah, yes. I hate those weird typos
π: 0 β©: 1
BakerChemi In reply to VelCake [2011-11-27 21:06:54 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately, no, it's not an exaggeration at all. It's just a very simple question: why do so many people say that coloring human skin a dark color is so hard to do, yet coloring everything else in the world a dark color is very easy to do? Does that make sense to you at all?
>>It feels as if you were inclined to think the only possible reason why one does not make dark-skinned characters is because they have some kind of bias or something.<<
Heh-heh, you said it, not me. But anyways, I won't talk about what people's true reasons might be...I'm just saying that the false reasons are "it's too difficult to do," or "it's too impossible to do."
π: 0 β©: 1
VelCake In reply to BakerChemi [2011-11-27 22:30:23 +0000 UTC]
Because coloring skin doesn't work in the same way other things such as clothes do? The human body requires a more sophisticated painting technique to achieve a good smoothness and depth. As of hair, it isn't easy to do either, because black is an impossible color to blend, therefore is harder to play with lights and shadows.
Though I never said it was easy to paint other things black, YOU said it.
No, you did. I said it is because it's harder, and it's not a bias, it's a fact, at least for me.

BakerChemi In reply to REVLAKECC [2011-12-05 22:07:56 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. Unfortunately, every time we push the effort one step forward, people like `Gwendolyn12 always push it two steps back again. If she and others always continue to perpetuate these obnoxious, asinine arguments about the "extreme difficulty" of coloring dark human skin, and ignore all the help and proof that shows otherwise, then they will always (whether they are aware of this or not) contribute to the overall perpetuated conclusion that light skin is therefore "better" to make than dark skin.

No, "NOT afraid" is a much better phrase to use, because it's a lot more provocative and expressive. It really gets the point of the issue across so much better.
