Description
~ Because 99.87% of animes are.~ So are some artists who has dark skin
Maybe it's the fear of not getting exposure?
Which is not true.... skill and fanart gives you exposure!
I am not talking about furries or furry artists. I am not talking about race . This is for the artists who creates human characters with medium to dark shades of skin.
I couldn't find one like it, so I had to create one.
Feel free to use this in your journal, just fave it first.

On a side note, when I created Animosity Sonata, their skin choice came after I had the story laid out. Originally their skin was going to be beet red because of the original color scheme
But they're brown now

That spurns me to continue drawing. When I was younger, I never saw anyone who looked like me. Now I can do it myself!

I'm ivory myself and I love characters from a large spectrum. I have a few and I really need to get them out there since these attributes are so repressed. It makes me happy to see olive, peach, tan, brown etc characters. I think they need to be recognized more.

People seem too afraid to give their characters actual ethnic features as well. Whenever someone DOES draw a "black" anime character, it looks more like someone just adjusted the colors on a white character and TA DA suddenly a different race. Would it kill them to give the characters broader noses or fuller lips? It's not racist, so I don't see why they can't.

I don't think it's fear of lack of exposure for most people. For a long time, it was that I would be unable to pull the character off as just a developed character and instead as a character with racist ideas and stereotypes plastered to him/her, lol. Granted, I got over that pretty quickly.

I noticed that a lot of people won't draw african americans unless they are of dark skin descent when it comes to fan art. If they do it's always overly sexually or something to do with a tribe somewhere in the jungle. Or the character is just a white or asain person with black ebony skin and long white hair.I've heard people say that black people are hard to draw( which can be true for some styles) or that they don't like how they look. It's pisses me off and depresses me at the same time. I been improving my style so I can have more ethnically diverse in my characters.
A Dark skin movement needs to catch more fires( like my little pony) and I think that comic book artist, mangakahs, and animators in the west need to put more in their professional work so there could be a larger base.

Don't feel pissed or depressed, we don't need anybody's approval, that's their racial problem. Black people/dark skin people are not hard to draw, just slap some dark skin and full lips on them and call it a day lol. And if they are that hard to draw, then those artists are not true artists, since they do not wish to challenge their skills.
"and I think that comic book artist, mangakahs, and animators in the west need to put more in their professional work so there could be a larger base."
I totally agree

Exactly. If there aren't black people in the the shows are anime, then the fan art for them is limited already. Yoruichi and Storm are a very good start and very popular characters, we need more of them.3-d characters that will make us care like Naruto, Miku, and Ichigo does.
I agree, people who don't want to challenge the status quo and reach out of their limits aren't artist. Artist don't limit their creative bonds, especially when it comes to exploring other cultures and art styles. People are so ignorant sometimes.

SPOKEN FOR TRUTH.
Even thought a HUGE majority of my original characters for my own ideas are more or less 95%, when I did start venturing into making OCs for other series that were human (or in some cases, Gijinkas) I was shocked to find that some people were actually surprised to find that someone would want to create black and/or dark-skinned characters for shows, especially those that are based on anime or games. I never really got this attitude and it continues to bother me, mainly because some of the excuses given to people giving reasoning why its 'strange' to see black characters is based on whether or not a black/dark-skinned character fits into the situation or the series.
Now, I have to ask; if a BLACK character apparently doesn't fit into a series like, say, The World Ends with You, a game that is set in Shibuya, then tell me why is it apparently okay for Caucasian OCs to be created without so much drama. You can't just say 'Well, there are NO black people in Japan!' or 'Its more likley that a white character would be in the setting than a black one!' because its bullocks. There are black people in Japan just like there are black people...EVERYWHERE. Its shocking to think that a lot of people think that black people only exist within Africa or the US and therefor, they shouldn't be in other settings....but everyone else gets a free pass?
The argument still bothers me because it just shows how close-minded people are. Fuck, this mindset is even in teh fucking PONY fandom as there have been people attacking artist who drew OCs or even the main characters as black, Latino, Indian, or other minority women. The comments were flying; 'Well, this character is the whitest on the show!' 'By the way they behave, they're all white!' 'This character doesn't act like a typical black person!' and so on. Its all sick and I hate that even now, we still have people this ignorant when it comes to how characters are created. Its even worse when someone tries to put in more minority characters and someone yells at them for being PC, because apparently wanting to create a show that actually has some diversity is a ploy and the only way for people to get anything is if all the characters are set to default, ie White apparently.
Text wall is one mighty text wall but I just had to get this off my chest. I get really tired of people acting like the world is going to end just because OCs are black or not the default of whatever show they belong to.

It's a shame really. Japanese anime likes to kiss white asses,
and not appreciate every human color scheme the world has to offer.
But hey! We're not seeking for their approval, we just create our own characters. Which is funner
Also anime isn't as exciting anymore. Mainly because of little/no change in diversity and because the style, characters and story lines are repeated. It's dying out to me. So I would much rather read a good web comic instead

Ross Campbell (the guy that created Wet Moon) linked me to a really good sight that explained the entire design of anime and what it was based on but unfortunitly I can't find it. What it did mention however was the fact that animators weren't aspiring to be 'white' when it came to drawing their characters (You have to remember that a lot of the earlier manga artist were inspired by the likes of Disney and other American/Western cartoonist) but rather that they didn't go so far as to create a racial 'identity' with them. I know I'm not using the right term but more or less its about 'We can look anyway we want, not just how you interperate us in reality' which would explain a lot of so-called Caucasian features, the wild hair and other things. Granted, not every manga artist in Japan or even beyond that follows this rule but its something that obviously influenced the style.
Now, this in of itself wouldn't be that BAD if it weren't for one thing; young kids who don't understand this and then go on to believe that this is what really makes anime 'anime' or that all anime characters are European. You have to be pretty thick headed to think that the likes of Ranma Satome, Shinchi Kudo, or any other JAPANESE anime character is AMERICAN/EUROPEAN just because they don't look '100% Japanese like how Americans draw them' but yet we have people who think that and use that as an excuse to literally create worlds with no diversity in character and design. Look at Avatar, a show that TRIED to break this that was even SET IN A MYTHOLOGICAL Asian world with Japanese, Chinese, Tibetian and Inut cultures but you'd be surprised how many people STILL think ALL the characters from the show are white. Why? Because they apparently don't look 'Asian enough' for them and anyone who points this out to them is trying to be PC.
When it comes to black characters, people will go even further and pull things like 'Well black people are hard to draw!' (Funny, considering there are animes with black people and they are drawn the same way as everyone else, but with DARK SKIN and simple designs in the lips and no, I'm not talking about the caricture blacks; I'm talking about the ones drawn with respect)or they assume that a lot of manga-kas have NEVER seen black people or unware that we either exist or that we are fans of their work. Statements like this just show how stupid people can be as well as how far they are willing to justify their own cultural ignorance.
As far as how anime has gone, I can really say that its in a slump mainly because of the bland shit they ship us here. There are actually a lot of GOOD series that are happening in Japan but what we are being sent is a niche lot, ie the stuff that mostly white fan-boys like and will jerk off to, which is why if you look at it in ways, there are so few titles sent sent here for anyone beyond that niche. This is why there are so few titles for young girls and women besides watery shojo and otherwise. Its just like comic publishers here; they know what their niche is and they are unwilling to change that just to include us 'black folks' or women or anyone else they deem as a risky market. Its just funny because if you flip it around, these so called 'risky markets' (mostly the women readers) are doing fine in their country of origin and are thriving. So why can't we get what they get, especially if publishers want their manga to continue making money and getting new fans? As far as style goes, it goes with the way art changes. In the 80s and 90s, you can see how the style differed and now we're going through the change again but yeah, I can admit that most of it sucks because its all looks the same, mainly with stiff and sharply designed faces and bodies, expressionless faces, and poor coloring efforts that make everything look shiny, metalic, and hard, even BODIES which are supposed to be soft. I was hoping the puchi style (round, soft features, not so much emphasis on making everything shiny) would become more popular during when it started to come around but I guess that dream ended.

When it comes to black characters, people will go even further and pull things like 'Well black people are hard to draw!' If anything, white people are a little harder for me to draw than black people, although that's probably only because I've had more practice drawing black people. It really depends on which ethnic group you have more experience drawing.

I really hate the 'They're hard to draw so I don't draw them but I'm still the perfect artist!!' type of attitude. There are a lot of things I find difficult to draw but I just don't reuse to draw them...I DRAW THEM TO GET BETTER! It doesn't make any sense that people would say shit like this in order to get some sympathy or to make excuses. I don't see how drawing a black person, especially in an ANIME or cartoony style, is all that hard. Some people just enjoy wallowing in their own ignorance I guess. I know I'm starting to sound angry but I've been thrown this excuse TOO much by people who want their asses kissed and don't seem to have a problem drawing galleries full of white and Asian women (and when I say ASIAN, I mean 'water down her features and give her an Asian sounding name)but when it comes to BLACK women or people in general, that's when they start getting 'nervous' or 'its beyond their talent'. BULL. SHIT.

yet to hear a legitimate excuse.
And yeah I can slightly
see what you mean in the first paragraph about not
wanting racial identity.
But I still think they should have added a more variety not
only in skin tone but eye shape as well. I agree with the last
paragraph, 90s 80s anime was better, maybe the animators
should go back to art school because they're not very good with
facial expressions

InkBottleInc In reply to Aivilo0 [2011-11-11 07:01:09 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's the most common excuse I hear other than 'Well, people in Japan have never met black people' so its something I've prepped myself to hear but it still pisses me off.
But its a shame sometimes. People try to act like race isn't an issue but they show their true color when they start complaining about black OCs and such in shows. Its like why are you complaining NOW? You said yourself that race doesn't matter yet when I show you this, you act like it some sort of problem.
I could go on for paragraphs about my dislike for certain current animes and why they often turn me off but that would just take too long. To make it short, it just boils down to everything being watered down to appeal to, once again, a niche crowd. Some stories are the same, characters are just cliche tropes, the animation is bad enough for anime standards and the designs are just boring sometimes. I bring it down to COST because sometimes, that's what it is. Hell, even some studios cut down cost to color their characters which is why anime characters that are produced from certain studios only have ONE skin tone. It happened with Hetalia (compare some of the darker characters that the creator drew and colored HIMSELF to the ones in the show) and it happens in other places. I just find it ironic in this age where digital animation and color was supposed to make things EASIER, you'd think that it wouldn't be that hard to eye-drop some decent brown tones in a show. I mean, if people could mix ink and do it without problem, there should be no excuse when we're doing everything on a fucking computer.
