Description Staring directly into the sun is harmful for your eyes.

Wow, this took me about three weekends to get it almost right. I say "almost" because I'm still not entirely satisfied with how this turned out, and feedbacks of ways for me to improve are always welcomed. I think it has to do with the general color of Applejack herself. I'm not going to lie, I find it difficult to harmonize the color of AJ's body with the environment.

Good, but give her a troubled look and instead of a hoof on the round bale, have it lifted in the air, as if she was in looking back at some place she had left (like the farm) and having conflicting thoughts(like maybe she doesn't want to leave).

It's very sweet and lovely. Applejack looks so wonderfully contented as she looks out over her day's accomplishments, and the landscape is equally beautiful.

I wonder how she would get home though. I think I had put her in the middle of a gigantic terrain of hills.

You have some nice Kinkade -style lighting going on, but want a true "painter of light"  style, with more realistic radiosity. Try painting with more distinct shadows and controlled light sources, and I don't think you'll have such problems with AJ's color. It looks like you did an excellent job of this already on the end of the hay bale and the grass beneath it. Good luck tuning your style!

Have you tried painting alongside with a tutorial that has something you wanted to achieve? I did several of that before and it does help me to discover certain brush stroke methods.

Prism-S In reply to aJVL [2014-10-03 18:14:25 +0000 UTC]

I have, and sometimes it helps, but this here.... this just.... feels like there were too many assorted brushes used in this.
How many brushes did ya use in this????

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aJVL In reply to Prism-S [2014-10-06 07:50:50 +0000 UTC]

I mainly used default brushes here. It's just change the "Texture" settings in the brush menu.

You've done a great job of creating harmony with Applejack and the environment. Because Applejack's color palette consists primarily of warm colors, I can definitely understand why it can be difficult to have her fit into some environments. The bales of hay help to balance the temperature of the scene quite a bit. Because of the yellow mixed into the grass, AJ should still be able to fit in nicely without the hay. However, the scene would look rather empty without those bales. Adding some subtle greens and blues from the environment onto Applejack's body may help to tone down her warmth. As this piece stands right now...Fantastic work!

aJVL In reply to AffinityShy [2014-09-02 14:57:18 +0000 UTC]

Those are actually quite an insightful thought. Yea, you're right. The sky was originally warm as well, like the colors you would see during sunset. But it kinda offset the balance of warm and cool color pallete, so I decided to look for some references and , eventually, made it bluish.

AffinityShy In reply to aJVL [2014-09-03 05:04:59 +0000 UTC]

That warm sky sounds beautiful, but as you said, it probably over-powered the piece, and by the sound of it you wanted something more balanced. Given that AJ is warm and won't change, making the sky cooler was a smart move. Between the cool sky and the cool, but warmer, ground, it certainly feels nicely balanced. ^^

aJVL In reply to AffinityShy [2014-09-14 14:28:01 +0000 UTC]

It was also quite an happy accident, really. Haha!

I was playing with the color blending mode and sorta unknowingly tweaked the sky bluish. I was like "Hey, that works".

Oh, I hope to see a good back story with AJ, in season 5.  Mainly about her parents!  Amazing painting by the way!!

I feel she needs a little bit more character development.

Here-for-the-ponies [2014-09-02 00:37:18 +0000 UTC]

I think the hay-bale does a good job of diffusing AJ into the background hues. I'm really not sure. I'd personally say to match the highlights of the grass around her with her highlights, rather than continuing to mess with the tone, because I like the coloring about how it is now, and feel like if the background were any cooler in the coolest areas, it'd offput the warmer tones too much.

aJVL In reply to Here-for-the-ponies [2014-09-02 15:01:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... hadn't thought of it that way. I will work on improving matching tone and highlights in the future. Thanks!
