Description
okay... the lovely requested a tutorial of how i do things from start to finish. so i did this for her. this isn't the best or the easiest method, it's just how i like to do things!i totally forgot some stuff in here, but i tried to include screens of the tools i use.
SOMETHING I FORGOT TO STATE
i use COREL PAINTER X and ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CREATIVE SUITE 2.
also, i use a tablet. if you do too, chances are pressure sensitivity is turned on. but if not, in the UPPER RIGHT of the screen for PS, there's a little tab named "brush". you can check the pressure sensitivity box under there.
i also forgot to mention that when you use the blender in PAINTER, don't just wiggle it around randomly. move the brush in the direction you want the strokes to go - just like you would on a piece of paper.
this is full of so much fail, sorry. download for the full size version where you can probably see progress a bit easier.

So basically it's just a whole lot of smudging? =w=;
Nice tutorial, btw.
Also: I use a free program called GIMP. Would all the, er- stuff still be the same?

i've never used gimp, so i don't know.
and it's not smudging, it's blending, there's a pretty significant difference in the way the tools work between photoshop and painter.
gimp could be similar, though... i dunno.

I love this tutorial, it's very informative and helpful.
one question though, I use Corel Painter and I moved one of the windows and now I don't have the window that shows the different tools. Do you know how I would find it or get it to come back? All I can use at the moment is the pen T_T

if you clicked it off completely, you should be able to go to "window - show toolbox" and you'll get it back.

Argh...
I don't know why, but pressure sensitivity isn't working on Photoshop CS but it's working on Open Canvas. I tried the brushes tab but it stil isn't working. Do you know anything that might help me out?
Awesome tutorial, by the way.

hmmm... that's happened to me before, but i didn't test it in another program. i unplugged my tablet and rebooted and it fixed it.
hmm... you went to the brushes tab and made sure shape dynamics was checked and all that?
as a last resort, i'd say to uninstall your tablet's drivers and reinstall and see if that helps... but whenever this has happened to me, closing the program fixed it. *shrug*

O.O I's still done know whats going on!!! >_> Computers and me just don't get along.... No, it isn't just the computers, it's also the fact that I don't practice my drawing enough besides my doodles XD which is what I do in all of my classes which I should be paying attention but partly don't care because they put me too low XP
Stupid transferring, messing with all of my classes and changing my sister from culinary arts to child development even though that one was entertaining.

It just goes to show that there are as many ways to digitally paint as there are artists. I never thought to adjust the levels at the end even though I do after I scan a pencil drawing....

yep, we all do things differently. everyone just has to find the best method. i'm sure mine is gathered from tutorials when i was a beginner, thrown together with what i've learned on my own.
before i change levels and color balance, my paintings are always slightly washed out and muted in color. it makes a world of difference to do it at the end in my case.
