Description
In 1982, something remarkable occurred in the state of California. In the 1982 Senatorial Election, Harvey Milk, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from the 5th district, was chosen to be the Democratic Party's nominee for the Senate seat. This was monumental, given that Harvey was the first openly gay man to be a candidate for a senatorial seat in California. Having survived an assassination attempt in 1978, this only increased his public profile on the state stage. He indicated a willingness to run for the senate in 1980.In contrast to him was Pete Wilson, the GOP Candidate. He had some disagreements with Milk, particularly in terms of financial solutions and other matters of state. There were attacks by the right wing sectors of the population, as the concept of an openly gay man being Senator was against their way of life. Despite this, Harvey pressed forward and began to gain momentum in the election, as the various communities rally behind him.
On November 2, the final results were in and by a comfortable margin, Harvey Milk was elected Senator of California, becoming the first openly gay man to serve as such. To the LGBTQ+ community, it was a monumental day in history and it was believed that nearly twenty million tuned in for his swearing in ceremony on Januray 3rd, 1983. Milk would serve as Senator from California up to his death in 2014. Governor Jerry Brown appointed Katie Porter to fulfill the reminder of Milk's sixth term, with Katie becoming Senator in her own right in 2016.
