Description The state funeral for the late Elizabeth III and Vladimir VIII was held in 1928, three years after Joseph Stalin assumed power from Lenin. Prior to that, Elizabeth III and Vladimir VIII passed away in 1920, at the age of 120, eliciting mass outpouring of grief from across the former Russian Empire, as they were viewed as the most benevolent and beloved rulers from 1814 to 1890. Many ethnicities in the Empire were given rights and the most liberal constitution in the Empire's history was passed. Even after the Russian Revolution, the two former rulers were loved by those in the new Russian SFSR.

After they passed away, they were initially denied burial in the Russian SFSR by Lenin, who wanted to keep the Russian SFSR away from the past. However, this only earned him the scorn of the people. Even members of the Communist Party were outraged at what Lenin was doing. They waited until Lenin was removed from power in 1924 to begin the process of accepting the remains back to Russia. It wasn't until the death of Lenin in 1926 that it could begin.

During the 8 year period between their deaths and their state funeral, the remains of Elizabeth III and Vladimir VIII were temporary stored in a mausoleum in the SR Croatia. Vladimir was President of Yugoslavia from 1810 to 1910, and as custom in the SFR Yugoslavia, former president's remains are in mausoleum's across the SFRY. When the Soviet Union approached the SFR Yugoslavia, with the intention to allow the remains of Elizabeth III and Vladimir VIII to buried in the Catherine and Vladimir Fortress, the government agreed to it.

The caskets were transported by the Yugoslav Presidential Aircraft from Belgrade to Moscow, being received by the Red Guards and a Soviet Delegation to greet the remains. They were soon transported to the Hall of Columns, where for a period of four days, around five million arrived in Moscow to attend the state funeral. Then, the remains were taken to Red Square, where members of the ruling party each gave eulogies that praised the two rulers. Then the remains were transported to the Catherine and Vladimir Fortress and laid to rest.
