It took nearly three hours for the ship to sink and like before, the Yugoslavs onboard performed bravely, ensuring that all passengers and crews got off the ship. Around 425 Yugoslavs died in the sinking, all from being in the cold Atlantic. Among the survivors was the Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Whitelaw Reid. Further opinion was turned against the German Empire, and a month later, the United States would declare war on the German Empire.
