Description
(Slavia Verse)On November 6th, 2014, Harvey Milk, the Californian Senator since 1983, was taken to Walter Reed Army Medical Center after he complained of chest pains. It had been known for over ten years that Milk had been ill with an unspecified type of cancer. That and combined with the fact that he was eighty-four, many were worried about his health, even though Milk himself constantly stated that he was alright and that he would run for reelection in 2016 and 2020, leaving a vague answer regarding 2024.
When word got out about the hospitalization, many began to send letters of prayers, many hoping that he would pull through. Statements from the family attorney didn't give good news, as on November 8th, Milk had fallen into a coma and it was likely that he wouldn't make it at the end of the month. On November 9th, at 5:46 AM, the family announced that Milk had passed away peacefully in his sleep, with loved ones by his side. Upon receiving word, Governor Jerry Brown appointed Katie Porter, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California's 45th congressional district, to serve the reminder of Milk's term.
President Joe Biden released a statement shortly after the news of Milk's death was heard, praising his hard work and dedication to helping people from all walks of life. Milk's flag draped coffin laid in state at the capital rotunda from November 10 to November 18, the longest period of laying in state. It was reasonable, given that an estimated four million people attended the laying in state, the largest amount for a single funeral. A day later, the casket was taken by flight to California, where on November 20th, the state funeral for Milk began, lasting up to November 25th. An estimated two million people attended the funeral, particularly the LGBTQ+ community there.
The day after the funeral, Milk's remains were cremated and his ashes were spread in the Pacific Ocean.
