Description
For those familiar with Dartmoor, or even those who appreciate the landscape, its easy to understand why Vixen Tor holds such great appeal, but entry to the public is forbidden because it is privately owned. This was taken on the say I went rainbow hunting unsucessfully. This is more or less the lowest the sun can get in the sky before Vixen Tor, which lies beneath surrounding hillsides is in shadow.
I really need to get out more at this time, when the light has softened, is highly directional, and yet doesnt have the trademark warmth of sunset.
On the distance lies Great Mis Tor. A location with commanding views but which is itself very challenging to photograph.

Do you know where Carlsbad Caverns, Old Faithful, or Half Dome is located?

well yes of course, but then you are asking me if I know where landmarks I have been to are, and they are internationally known!

It's amazing, but somehow, though the evidence is right there, I can't resolve this as being a photograph. The lighting; the colors; the composition, the realer-than-real level of texture and the depth of field all point to something wholly unreal- but wholly stunning.

yeah, you're the second person to say something similar, really thats a good compliment for me because its only had a bit of saturation and darkening of the sky by 0.5stops

Very well captured, Alex. The contrast change from foreground to background makes this one special.

yeah, just a shame you cant visit the tor itself, by all accounts the woman who owns it is a bit of a nazi!

good shot... though it seems so unreal to me... (that rocks mostly ) Honestly, if there wouldn't be written it's a photography I would probably think it's a painting...
But it's still an awesome shot...

Thanks, well its hardly edited at all, so its a nice thing to here. I darkened the sky by half a stop and added a little saturation.
Thanks
Alex

Great image. The light has given it the feel of a watercolour painting, especially in the sky.

Alex this image is absolutely incredible. The rock is very busy with all the plant growth within it and the foreground is wild with many interesting yet cluttered elements yet you managed to pull it off. Not too mention that this scene is really benefiting from the soft light and if there were no clouds to diffuse the setting sun the shadows would be too harsh and the image probably wouldn't work. Again an amazing image and the colour palette is subtle yet effective.

yeah, the thing is, if you do have a really cluttered shot, if the clutter is similar and the focal point is really strong, then I suppose its not such a problem. This is the tallest Tor on Dartmoor, but one of the lower ones in terms of altitude. Because it sits so far above the vegetation you can get views of the tor like this from almost the shole way around Thanks very much James

Thanks, it basically sunset light, but not quite, which is nice, because most people wont think "oh another sunset shot" which is a criticism my parents often level at me!

I really like it in square format as well, really well balanced in my opinion as you would agree I'm sure.

well actually I would have perferred it in landscape, but there was a distraction in the bottom right corner (bright are of dry grass) and I didnt want to crop from the bottom, so I tried a square crop and found that I liked it

DrewHopper In reply to Alex37 [2009-07-21 09:05:37 +0000 UTC]
Now after looking at the image for 5 minutes I think landscape would also work well. If you included more of the rocks on the left, I'd be interested to see that.
