Do you have a tutorial on this "average to boost signal-to-noise ratio"? It sounds interesting and I'm looking into it because I'm not always satisfied with how Photoshop reduces noise in my Canon RAW files. I'm looking at this tutorial [link] and wondering if that's what you did. Thanks!

Alexey-Kljatov In reply to AlexFlorezArt [2013-01-23 07:52:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, i use averaging, as described in this article. Because i use compact camera and heavy cropping of snowflake from center of 12 megapixel shot, noise is my biggest problem, it's annoying even at lowest ISO (80). After averaging of 8 identical shots and using noise removing software at background (with manually painted mask) noise reduced to acceptable level.

These snowflake serial shots are not ideally aligned: there is some shifts and small rotates, and resolution of object very small. Aligning function in Photoshop work very well, but in this case we need more: subpixel precision. In recent snowflake shots i use this technique: firstly, i load all shots as layers, and do rough manual aligning by center of snowflake (here helps "difference" blending mode: i shift layers, trying to get darkest picture, which indicates minimal differences, and then change blending mode back to "normal"). After that, i crop picture, leaving some space around snowflake in all directions. This background usually contains some dirt and debris, and it is good, because this garbage will help photoshop aligning software later, serves as additional markers. Then, i resize cropped picture to 500% (5x), using bicubic interpolation, select all layers and apply "edit - auto align layers" function, setting switch to "auto". When it's done, i see good aligned stack with subpixel precision. Now i average (sum) them, by setting opacity of layers, then i flatten them and downscale image back to its original size. Alternatively, good alignment can be achieved by using "align_image_stack.exe" commandline utility from Hugin (freeware panorama stitching package).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alexey-Kljatov In reply to galacticpink [2013-01-23 07:57:10 +0000 UTC]

I shoot it outside, at open balcony of my house. Macro lens was cold enough and not melt it from 3 cm shooting distance.
