Amazinglyspiffy helpful, thanks a ton!
One question tho - any tips on making the lineart look actually 3-D? Because whenever I always do lineart over sketches, it always looks/feels like I'm just tracing something, and never looks as real as the sketch does. :<

Well usually lineart will look like lineart, not like 3D :> No uh, but for a feeling of solidity, watch your ellipses and make sure things converge properly! It's really in the foreshortening, I have a lot of room for improvement there :I

great work hannes, thanks for the efforts! really like the idea behind the picture and how she is covering her eyes kind of shamed for all the war going on in the world.
thanks again!

Because I'm a "pretty fiend" usually I just look at the pictures and notice the subtle changes, but really, reading all of this has opened my eyes a bazillion times. I love your work and reading this was really inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to write all of this out. Really, thank you.

the question is not how many years but how much effort your willing to put in to get to this level.

Any tips on making the lines smooth, and pretty?

gekitsu In reply to tikeo [2011-04-19 21:25:11 +0000 UTC]
well, im not hannes, and he probably has his own point on this. (especially because his lines are so freaking clean...)
do you mean from a technical point of view, like, "how the hell do i get photoshop lines looking somewhat like the lines i can draw on paper?" - i have no idea - or do you mean for drawing in general? if the latter, i find it helps to make a point of not relying on the finger muscles too much for drawing. with the fingers, you can do those tiny tiny movements really well, but if you only use those to piece together larger lines, the result wont be much to write home about. what helped me was using the wrist and elbow more, sometimes even putting a bit of shoulder movement in, and think for a bit before i put down the pencil. when scribbling, i carry my wandering mind in my hand, the lines just flow out of my pencil,. when i try doing a clean, good drawing, i have to value the marks i make. i need to have a picture of what i want it to look like in my head. if i know that, i wont need to make my lines baby step wise: i know the big picture of the mark already. also, rotating the paper according to stroke direction might help, too.

Oh! Thank you. I guess I was wondering about how to get photoshops lines to look sharp and crisp like when I ink on traditional paper.

This is amazing, thank you so much for this.
You say do a lot of studies, and I totally agree, but it's always intimidating to know where to start. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks again Hannes, you're a true inspiration.

algenpfleger In reply to LindseyWArt [2011-04-19 17:01:04 +0000 UTC]
Well, what do you like the most? That's one starting point. Another would be, what's your biggest weakness? Edges? Color? Anatomy? Do some studies to tackle something specific! Or, what do you want to learn because you think it'd be cool to have in your work? Better poses, more subtle lighting? Go study something and concentrate on that
These kinds of things.

Great tutorial - as you say, forget the minutiae of what brush settings and paper are used and get into to the process. That way it applies to any and all graphics programs.
