Can't get this to load, but I'll keep trying from over here in China. Just dying to know one thing.. and I've been asking this of all the great digital painters on this site... Do you use a Cintiq?

Very handy indepth tutorial. I like how you talk about your process of what you are thinking about too, I think very similar when I'm painting/drawing and agree with all your points. Studies make a huge difference and are the only real way to learn how to draw from memory properly and just drawing in general. I'm guessing you must do a hell of alot of studies though looking at your apintings, very impressive and your certainly seem to know what you're doing. If you have a minute though would be nice if you could give me a few comments on a couple of my pieces. First this [link] sketch I just started, its still quite messy but theres something I can't put my finger on that just isnt right, I'm sure theres quite a few things wrong but I think theres a couple of key things that could be easily fixed by somone like yourself pointing them out. Also if you have the time could you look at these paintings and tell me what areas of painting you think I should focus on the most. [link] [link] second one is a bit messed up though, lot of work needed on tha tone I think . Cheers.

Verstehste was ich meine?

Holy shit a mere human being like me is allowed to see such a gloriouslicious thing as this?!?OTL you keep sharing awesome stuff all the time,my eyeballs can't take anymore pressure against this screen of mine....actually FUCK IT! BRING IT ON IMMA SQUASH THEM TO SMITHEREENS! no really man, it's really great that you do this and it's truly appreciated so thanks a bunch. I'm currently in a kind of bad phase for drawing, and on top of that I feel so crushed by looking at you all greater artists' works cos it reminds me of how much I suck and how much left there is to learn, but I know that when I get out of this slump it's gonna be the main fuel for hard work and motivation, along with the thought of the enormous amount of fun&possibilities of actually being able to make something that looks decent in the future when I achieve this kind of powerlevel. I'm slowly abandoning my manga&anime influenced things since I feel sick when I draw it, and it just feels like it (me ignorantly choosing it of course) has wasted a lot of my time and held me back for too long
In any case, thanks again, you and janaschi are one of my bigger inspirations out there. keep up the good work dude!

Dood what are you talking about, I think your stuff is lovely! Don't completely abandon the manga inspired things, I adore the looseness and emotion in your work, try to keep that while you're adding what you will! It's gonna be a bit of a juggle but the result will be AWESOME O_O And thanks for the nice words!

but what the hell man you watched me?!??did not see that one coming, I'm so fucking embarrassed and confused!
gah.. thank you, and for the encouragement too OTL I will continue the art journey of improvement. well I have to, since it's what I want to work with after all, together with ~ZZGRST . he's working hard too, and I hope we can make fun and amazing collabs like you and Jana in the future! but meanwhile you go and keep being the awesome jawbreaker beast that you are (TAT)b

Well there will be a lot of forcing ahead of us too now, but thats one of the things right? to challenge and push yourself to the limits and beyond in order to become awesome (otherwise we might end up as burger-flippers lol)
in any case, thanks again Algen. it's good to hear you're having fun

I can relate to seeing how good I'm NOT when I look at great artists like Johannes. But you're better than you give yourself credit for. After reading your comment, I went to your gallery expecting to see average or slightly below, but I've gotta say I think you show a ton of potential. You're better than the average cat already, but you could be as good as Johannes or Jana or anyone else if you just keep on keepin on. I do agree with your idea of expanding beyond just anime and manga styles, though. I'm not a fan of either style, really, but you do them well. It's just a matter of not falling into a habit that you never get out of. But I'm sure you know about expanding horizons and challenging yourself and blah blah and all that jazz, so I won't preach. I'll just say that I hope you stick with it

Thank you for taking the time to make this and share with us. It seems like the best, most technically skilled artists are also the most willing to help their fellows. Somehow, I don't think that's a coincidence! I feel there is something in that mindset of someone who is hungry for knowledge that makes them generous with the knowledge that they do have. Sorry to ramble! Beautiful work, as always!

damnnn , this is definately one of the better tutorials i've read - so informative and in depth, you actually explain *why* you do things, not just how, so we can apply it to more than just a copy of the tutorial picture. i loved all the insights on colour theory and composition, a lot of it i didn't know at all/hadn't occured to me before.
thank you so much for this!!

WOuld'a been SO kewl if you put an extra step from the lines to colour, its just so much of a jump, and where alot of questions lie is in how to go about painting the colour xD But that step is missed
But freaking epic job though i gotta admit, itll help alot of people!

Ah, sorry about that, but it IS just one step : D That's why I tried to put down my thoughts. That stage is really "think of palette, put in basic color"
