This is very helpful- I'm a real novice to digital work since I work with more traditional methods like paper, pencil and markers...

Thanks so much - good tips!
If you don’t mind I have a question regarding the greyscale phase (I don't usually use this technique but would like to give it a try):
You put it above the colors: do you lower the opacity or use a layer style? I presume the greyscale painting is all done in one layer….
Thank you again

I set the layer "style" to soft light. If you set it to anything else it might make the color look too gray. Soft light lets the color still shine through pretty well and if I need to darken anything I just duplicate. Instead of doing the entire grayscale in one layer it is best to work in several layers in the same group, although I know many amazing artist that do it all in one layer. Keep the group's style at "pass through" or else it will lighten all of your layers. If you have any more questions feel free to ask away.

It's a low res file so that it'll load quickly. It would be very pixilated if you print it. What I usually do when I work from tutorials is I open the image in a image previewer program ("windows photo gallery" if you're on a pc or "preview" if you're using a mac) and zoom, then I jump back and forth between the program I'm working in and the image previewer.

Thanks. Why not find a contest to enter? If you can't think of what to make let other people decide and win prizes.
