EDIT: Fixed a lot of my typos and grammar errors. Derp.

Oh man, I promised one for a long while now. >.>
I'm not sure how helpful this will be, since its practically a giant progress thing.

This covers the basic use of the lasso tool, and shortcuts of photoshop.

This is really just one of the many ways I do things. For a picture much like my madhatter piece, I use a completely different method. The same also applies for pictures like "Shut up and listen".

Please let me know if you found this useful! ;w; If it proves helpful, perhaps I will make more someday. Feel free to ask questions as well!

P.S= This is the LONGEST tutorial I have ever posted. (in terms of height size) I'm sorry for you people with a slow bandwidth. D:

This is really handy, thank you for making this tutorial. I'm still a very basic colorer. XD;

Aw no problem! I wish I could have explained things a bit more, though. Perhaps like how to choose colors and where to shade. D: I will make a sequel to this one day, though

Omi-gosh, I have to thank you a thousand times~! At first, I didn't think ANY of these steps would work with my program, but I decided I should at least try, right? So I started out exactly like you were doing - all the layers and such. But when I got that finished, I couldn't figure out how to do the shading. T~T I ended up doing it my own way with that, but you helped me so much! I did my FIRST EVER digital coloring~! I'm so happy, thank you so much!!!

Oh, wow, that's really useful! I guess if I get Photoshop I'll be able to use this. I have Corel Painter 11, so I have no idea how that program works. I barely know how to use the program I have now! |D
It was long but I read it ALL! And it was so slow to load! *shot* Awesome tutorial~! ^^

Nah, that's okay. I don't mind long loads THAT much, I just usually open a new tab and look for something else that I can do to wait. ^^ And you're welcomez~!

Thanks for the tutorial! ^^
Sorry to ask but, how do you pick your colour palette for the skin? =]
[I'm sorry, it's possibly one of the most annoying questions]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

owdof In reply to LiLkawaiibunny [2010-04-13 21:53:06 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!
and its really no problem. :3 I honestly just developed my own habit on choosing colors. Its really just the same for all colors, like the clothes and hair. I always start with a midtone and add shadows and highlights later on. I then choose colors that arent just the same midtone color, but darker-- I change the hue slightly as well as the saturation.

I hope that answers your question!

LiLkawaiibunny In reply to owdof [2010-04-13 21:59:17 +0000 UTC]

(^_^)

Thank you,
it was a really big help! ^^

[another annoying question]
Is there any particular colour that would look good for the skin? =]
[I'm so not sure if that makes sense! XD I'm colouring this drawing made from my friend based on our friend and I'm having huge trouble with choosing the right colours for their skin. (>_<)]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

owdof In reply to LiLkawaiibunny [2010-04-13 22:02:49 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! I'm glad I was able to make it understandable. :]

Well, it really would depend on the kind of skin you're coloring, since everyone has different skin. You have pinkish skin, yellowish, tan, dark, etc. However, I almost always start with a pale yellow for reference and just change the hue accordingly, depending on the person's skin tone.

MyRomeo [2010-03-29 00:30:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you SO much. You made my life so much better. >> I do hate erasing since I used to just take a big brush, plop it on there and then spend another twenty minutes erasing DX This will make my life so much easier! Thank you so much again. -glomp- Anyway, I did have one question: What did you mean by using the watercolor tool to lay down primary shades of every layer? Also, how would you do that? -sainoob-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

owdof In reply to MyRomeo [2010-03-29 00:37:39 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! I'm glad I was able to help you speed up the tedious erasing process. :]

Primary shades are basically the first layer of shades I do on every layer-- its just a big blob of shady madness to establish where my main lightsource is. I just go around areas where the light would create shades, pressing harder where they get darker. I just treat the watercolor tool like a big mop and go over everything really fast (with a light shade). :]

After I'm done laying down the big mass of shades with the watercolor tool, I go back in and use the marker (with a small brush size) to 'sketch' in more details.

I hope that helped!

MyRomeo In reply to owdof [2010-03-29 23:59:45 +0000 UTC]

Cool! Yes it did. I can't wait to try out this style! I'm still trying to figure out my own style of shading; I'm abusing the dodge and burn tools right now! >D Next up is your process! 8D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

owdof In reply to MyRomeo [2010-03-30 00:01:27 +0000 UTC]

B'aw, the dodge and burnnn~ xD Its so easy to just burn and dodge things, but most artists grow out of those tools when they discover their own way of shading. :]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyRomeo In reply to owdof [2010-03-30 00:39:51 +0000 UTC]

XD Yuup. Well, I just discovered how to properly use those tools, so I'm still screwing around with them. o3o; Oh my, I'm such a noob xD

Chaz-the-Kuangshi [2010-03-28 20:13:11 +0000 UTC]

This is a great tutorial! I always used multiply layers to color, and using the lasso tool is much easier than a brush xD Now I don't have to worry about white parts so much! Thanks!

I used to use multiply layers as well, which is why I thought I'd share my new method with people who want a different option. <33

oh yeah, btw, super thanks for the tips!
