Personal work based off of "2001: A Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick
Thank you everyone on the CGsociety WIP boards for all the help!!
This painting depicts an astronaut being shown the destruction of his planet, Earth, after touching a monolith on a distant planet.
************Elaboration********
The means by which a form of intelligent life in this universe might contact another form of intelligent life in this universe are few and difficult given the vastness of space. The director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick, introduced me to the wonder of one of these possibilities in his film:
Self replicating cosmic burglar alarms that scatter themselves throughout the galaxy and become activated when some form of intelligent life is near or touches one. In Stanley Kubrick's film they are portrayed simply as Monoliths ([link] ).
In Kubrick's film, he postulates that alien intelligent life that is significantly advanced enough to send out these monoliths, would welcome our presence.
I postulate instead, that a species that is about to reach its "singularity" and progress into a new Epoch (read The Singularity Is Near by Raymond Kurzweil), such as humans, would, during this transition undoubtedly develop new and potentially destructive forms of technology we are incapable of even imagining yet. And, a species advanced enough to have passed safely through that epoch and through their own singularity would undoubtedly know its dangers and be significantly cautious enough to have avoided their own destruction.
And so, I imagine that such a cautious species that would have survived to build the monoliths, would understand that even if another species, human's for example have even a 1% chance of destroying themselves and their universe during a transition past their "singularity", it would be too great of a risk. So while Kubrickβs monoliths encourage life, mine are a little less forgiving and are instead built to destroy any form of intelligent life that might one day threaten the universe and it's established life. Not out of cruelty or hate, just caution.

'Don't touch it! You'll die if you touch it!' But of course, he does. The horror on his face and the reflections are exquisite.
