This has been very helpful! I am currently making my very first lolita dress and wanted to be sure to do it right. This tutorial has given me some pointers that otherwise I might have missed. Thank you so much for making it!

ahm, i haz a question about the right finishing picture. Why do u have four rectangle forms, but two are for the sides but what are the other 2 for? O:
Or are that also for the sides? o;

Hello! The two larger panels with the roundish bottom were for the middle panels that covered my torso and back. I took my measurement, divided by 6, and made the dress with 6 panels for a better fit.

Ohhh, its so the fabric can follow the curves for the skirt to flare out.

(This isnt the bestpattern i've made - admittingly - i've learned a lot more about pattern making since then. If you wanna use straight lines in a skirt panel you can.)

Tora-NaruSasuFan In reply to allychan [2011-05-19 15:11:12 +0000 UTC]

ooh, i see and could u tell me how u did those ruffles on ur finished dress? o;
lawl, sorry for the questions xD

allychan In reply to Tora-NaruSasuFan [2011-06-04 04:48:43 +0000 UTC]

Sorry it took so long to reply!

I made a very very very very long rectangle, and in the center I made a 1/4th inch stitch length all the way through. When you pull the string, the fabric gathers in to ruffles.

What kind of fabric are you using? A lightly stretchy one? :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

allychan In reply to ShiakiSama [2011-02-18 02:55:49 +0000 UTC]

No, it was a woven, it has a tiny bit of pull but it doesn't stretch much. :3 the fabric I was using here was a cotton blend fabric.

Thanks so much for doing this, it REALLY helped me a lot!
Without this I'd propably never get away from pre-made patterns (I haven't even started with them)
Now I just need to learn how to use a sewing machine and then I can start going crazy

Thank youuu!

Knock your socks off! That is what its for. Just as long as you're not trying to claim it to be your own, which you're not, then do what you want with it.

How many inches should be added on to the measurments for sewing allowance *sp?>.O * You know, to its not too tight?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

allychan In reply to Karichi [2009-09-14 03:09:30 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I usually.... just add a half of an inch or even a whole inch to the measurement. It just depends, I would totally give yourself a good .5-1 inch though if you're a beginner.

In the industry, they dont even give you seam allowance on patterns

Karichi In reply to allychan [2009-09-14 21:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that sucks. D=
Ok thenx! And when do you think youll be putting up the 3rd one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

allychan In reply to Karichi [2009-09-21 03:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Im not quite sure since I'm in college. The next step would be a walk-through of a sewing machine but... One machine wouldn't be the same as all others... so.

Eventually i'll do something... I've finished the dress already but didn't take photos when sewing... (It would of been too complex to explain anyways... XD ) but eventually i'll do something when I have free time.

^^ I'm glad you like them!
