Description

HD 209458 b; informally known as Osiris (after the Egyptian god of the dead) is a hot jupiter planet orbiting the sun-like star, HD 209458 b about 154 light years away in the constellation of Pegasus. This planet holds many firsts for astronomy such as being the first planet to be detected to transit, its star and detected through more than one method.

Osiris is just under 3/4 the mass of jupiter but has a radius that is 1 and 1/3 times that of jupiter's, implying that it has a low density. The reason for this low density is most likely due to super heating of the planet's atmosphere by the star, as the planet orbits in what is known as a 'torch' orbit circuling right next to the star. Because of this orbit, the planet was also detected to have its atmosphere being blown away by the intense stellar wind, forming a long come-like tail surrounding the planet and extending out away from the planet's orbit. Due to it's high temperature, the planet likely glows red and has a greenish appaerance due to the metals and silicates that are vapourised in its hellish atmosphere. This atmosphere was also detected to have a super storm and winds blowing at 7000 km an hour.

It's not just HD 209458b that is having its atmosphere being blown away. HD 189733b (yes, it is blue), which is 63 light years away from the solar system, is another example, Corot-2b is also having its atmosphere blown off. And WASP-12b is also being blown to death. In fact, WASP-12b may not even be around in 10 million years. There is proof that Corot-7b was a Jupiter type planet. And lying an uncomfortable 1,500 light years away from Earth there may lay ANOTHER evaporating planet orbiting the star KIC 125548. They found SOMETHING orbiting that star. Plus Gliese 436b has a comet-like tail just like HD 209458b. And the hot Neptune orbits a red dwarf.
This picture is still gorgeous.
