“In the vast universe, the history of humanity  is but a flash of light from a lone star. The life of a single person should be lost in space and time. But among the stars, there is one light that burns brighter than all others. The light of Samus Aran. Her battles extend beyond her life, and etch themselves into history.„

Metroid Prime  intro

BIO

Samus Aran is an intergalactic bounty hunter and the main protagonist of the Metroid  series, in Amaglamation her history is shared among many other heroes and so some details may be altered.

Orphaned during a Space Pirate raid on her home of K-2L , Samus was actually taken by ONI in this timeline to become apart of the Spartan 2 program. In 2160 she was selected among fifty other candidates (of 300 in this timeline) to undergo more severe augmentations earlier than the others, most of these candidates were meta-humans or had meta-genes dormant of some degree. She failed the augmentations and was crippled by them, and in transit to a medical facility was rescue by the mysterious Chozo  (through none-violent means) and taken to Zebes  where she was infused with their DNA and raised, trained and augmented to resume her fate of becoming a warrior, a super-soldier of unnatural capabilities. Once she reached adulthood, Samus joined the Federation Police  where she served under the Commanding Officer Adam Malkovich , but she ultimately left to become a Bounty Hunter , though she was nonetheless recruited by the Galactic Federation  on many occasions. Armed in her cybernetic Power Suit , Samus has become famous for her accomplishments on missions others thought impossible. Her most renowned achievements are the destruction of the Space Pirate  base on Zebes. (Metroid Zero Mission) and in Amalgamation canon is known for taking down Yautja, Covenant species, Geth, and even a Cybertronian on 1v1 without much pause for concern.

After her accomplishments on Zebes she was betrayed by the Galactic Federation on their base/embassy over Earth. It is unknown whether or not the plot came from the highest command of the Federation or just a rogue cell. Samus, amidst the commotion of the betrayal was sought out and simultaneously rescued and recruited by Rhodey Stark (Ironman/woman 3030) (Vindicate's Issue #2) she is the second member of the group.

Samus by this point had grown used to being on her own, her time within the Federation Military saw her working within a squad of her own but those days were long lost in memory, she'll have to work hard getting used to being in a team again.

Yaaaay, finally 3D art comes to Project comment e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> (and with Blender... it's christmas day!)

The piece shows a remarkable technical mastery. Controlled lighting, soft glow, volumetric (or fake volumetric?) effects, anamorphic flare and, of course, a clean modelling and texturing. Red and (mostly) green make great contrasting colors to differenciate between Samus and the monsters.

I find the scene too dark overall. Your histogram is very left-skewed, with most intensities being in [0-50]. A simple [0-190] to [0-250] rescale (which I tried) greatly enhances the image without losing the darkness effect (or you can use the RGB curves node in the compositor). If you don't find the scene dark, you may be working on a badly calibrated screen.

The main negative point is that I find the poses too static. While it's appropriate for Samus ("badass mode"), the monsters should have a more agressive stance, and the left group shouldn't be a mirror of the right group. Some aren't even looking at her... It would enchance the contrast between Samus and the monsters and definitely give more life to the scene. You can use particle systems to make your life easier randomising the scene (make a few different poses, apply armature, group them together and use the objets in a hair system generated from the ground. Apply the system and then correct rotations manually)

I wonder about the rainbow-like lines at the top left and right. While it is true that they make good leading lines towards Samus, they also draw too much attention because of their red and green components which are the contrasting colors of the scene. Blue would definitely be better.

On a side note, I found that the music choice doesn't relate to the scene. Probably personal perception I guess.

So, definitely an image and a theme with great potential, but that, to me, fails to have a strong impact because (mostly) of the poses. I know Blender doesn't have good crowd tools, but particle systems can help you.

Thank you for the critique! I really need guidance with my 3D artwork, mainly lighting and compositing because I like making dark scenes but I can never seem to get em to come out right!

You wouldn't be interested in taking in an apprentice would you...? Haha I need a mentor and your render's are awesome!

And now I'm going to interrogate you a little bit on what you've said

1st question, what do you mean by

"A simple [0-190]" What is that?

secondly I did use the RGB curves in the compositor I'm just new at compositing and am unskilled

I agree with the poses upon reading you comment, I will go and re-pose the scene when I've figured out everything else I need to do with the lighting but... I have NO idea what you're talking about with the particle systems and posing!

I've only used particles in blender once and it was to create fog for this scene:

and it doesn't even show here! All it did was slow down the damn render lol, I think you can see the fog better in the previous version of this which is crap

You can set poses and re-use em for different armature's and also randomise em!? TEACH ME! I need to know this! I make comics and that's help cut my time down immensely!

the rainbow lines are a side effect of the "lens distortion" I used on the background which has lights in it, it's blurring them

the only thing I disagree with is what you said about the music, I always thought of Samus as a lonely character, always fighting on her own, and in the context of the comics I'm making and the story that follows with them I think that it suits her, and the scene, quite well. But that's just different music tastes haha.

I guess I got too technical. Each pixel has a "luminosity" value which is basically the average of its RGB channels, and is a number between 0 and 255. When you open the histogram of luminosity in Photoshop for example, you can move the black (0) and white (255) levels. If you move the white level from 255 to 190, it makes your scene more contrasted only on the dark tones, which is just what you need.

You can't randomize poses. You need to make each pose manually by duplicating the armatures and the monsters. But after you make a library of posed characters, Blender can pick up randomly. Check this tutorial about how using particle (hair) systems to generate objects randomly from a library: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXiCxk…
Note that you have full control only over 2 rotation directions. So it's great for doing trees, not that much for characters that need to have a defined orientation and it takes some manual editing to correct the orientations, but it saves some time by doing most of the boring work for you.

Also, particles don't render by themselves in Cycles, you need to either set up an object for them or use a point density (point density recommended if you want to make a fog effect)

Sorry for the late reply was busy all day yesterday.

Not too technical I'm just a noob in some areas haha.

I did exactly what you said with the lighting in Photoshop and I agree it does come out a lot better but still keeps the dark feel, I haven't re-rendered the scene yet because that'll take a while but for now I've updated it so it's on 190/brighter.

Thank you for the tutorial! I'll watch it when my home internet is back up!

Thank you so much for your ciritique, may I ask something though? At just a glance when you look over my art, does it look as if I'm improving?

Your gallery started in may 2016, which is less than a year. I find some images better than others, but no clear trend stands out because of the small sample size. You know, my own images don't show much difference either, just a tendancy to experiment more unusual stuff recently.

Definitely. The new image gives a more crowded feeling, makes better use of the rule of thirds and makes better use of the contrast between the important characters and the background.

It looks like she's about to fight against corrupted Elites.
This isn't a fair fight. The Elites need atleast a dozen phazon mutated Imperium of Man Dreadnoughts and a pair of corrupted Decepticons to level the playing field.

Great work on this. I'm not one who knows all that goes into 3D art but it looks amazing. Definitely brings me back my gaming days lol I like the contrast between the green glow of Samus  and the soft blue of everyone else. There's great detail in the texture of the floor too, which is nice. Good work!

Eternally-lams In reply to Amalgamation100 [2017-02-16 02:48:04 +0000 UTC]

No doubt! 2D art is flat. Not saying it's necessarily easier though, there's plenty of mind blowing 2D artists. But 3D art is almost as if you need to put yourself as a 4th dimension creator, being the one who knows it at all angles while everyone else only sees the view that's shown if that makes sense and maybe I'm wrong haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Amalgamation100 In reply to Eternally-lams [2017-02-16 02:57:26 +0000 UTC]

Nah that's pretty accurate haha

2D is still hard work though. You need to guess the 3D aspect with shading and angles and try to convey em on a 2D canvas.
