Niv swam up a waterway, feeling the pinch of her nature features fading away leaving her dorsal barren, to a lake where she sensed another of her kind: a small green esk. It was a sneaky little thing, darting among the lily pads. Niv advanced with determined curiosity. Thus far Niv had regarded others of her kind with hatred – why did they not have the answers she sought? Now she wanted to know more, regardless of the answers.

“Wait! I am Niv, who are—hey!”

It was hard to follow the little esk, tiny in size compared to Niv. It flitted expertly around its boundary and camouflaged itself amongst the green pads along the surface of the water. After minutes of being unable to catch him, Niv experienced the bubbling sensation inside again. Before they knew it the chase had become playful, sending a zing of energy through them both.

At one point the other esk darted just out of reach of Niv’s nose and giggled, “I am Nerou,” then just like that he was racing among the lily pads.

The drone of a mechanical motor overhead disturbed their fun and grated on Niv’s nerves. She flicked her tail under the motorboat – but accidentally caused a reaction that punctured one of the fuel tanks! As the engine sputtered and died, black substance from the tank dribbled out onto the lake surface.

The stench of the substance chased away the animals on land and underwater. Suspicious, Niv swam closer to inspect the substance. It was viscous and inky and all Niv could think of as she swam around it was, Poison. She felt a disturbance in the water by her flank and turned just as Nerou cried out in Niv’s mind, sadness spreading from him through Niv even as the humans scrambled among their fishing poles for material to plug the hole with. Niv felt a sinking feeling inside her chest – guilt, the same as when she had yelled at Scamper the last time Niv had seen her – and approached the boat.

Before she could get to it the humans had plugged the hole and fortunately a barrier of lily pads had blocked the spread of the dark substance. Thunder boomed overhead as the humans pulled out paddles and made for the shore. The thunder only deepened the sinking feeling inside Niv. She knew water from the sky meant the black stuff could be spread around the lake.

Humans, she huffed, emitting a feeling of frustration. Another boom of thunder sent Niv scouring for something to gather the inky substance with. Something small zipped by her – Nerou who also searched.

I am sorry, she thought to Nerou, desperate. I did not mean to. With a start she realized that a slight pressure was released inside of her from the place where the knot usually was. Perhaps she had been wanting to say the words all along to another esk…

Nerou did not answer for a long time while they searched. Then Niv heard an answer from a stronger and more practiced in telepathic voice than hers – though it was accompanied with a feeling of agitation: Then help fix it.

Niv swam faster under the ripples of rain on the lake surface.

Niv and Nerou managed to find a plastic manmade container with which to scoop the fuel from the lake. Niv took over carrying the container with telekinesis and promised to dispose of it among the humans. She promised Nerou she would return for another game of tag before bidding him goodbye to follow tire tracks through the dirt. Once in a developed area she followed the humans around until she located a place that seemed to house foul-smelling substance that was similar to the oily stuff from the lake. Niv deposited the container near the building entrance and waited until a human came across it.

Annabelle pinched her nose as soon as she stepped out the door to check the parking lot before locking up for the night. Who the hell would just leave a container of gasoline and water here? Looking around the parking lot revealed no one nearby. She leaned over the container cautiously. It was wide and, after tilting it with care, she did not see anything scary hidden in the depths like a bomb or a slug monster – wait, was that a plant floating in there? She grumbled something about back-country weirdoes and leaned back in the auto supply shop, calling to her coworker for help. The container was too unwieldy for her to manage bearing it through the doors and aisles inside on her own.

Satisfied, Niv navigated back down the waterways, headed for the ocean.

Archalyte actually did some beautiful gift art of Niv and I really wanted to do something for them of their cutie~
Also, does anyone have tips on drawing masses of trees like this? I don't want to use a tree brush. Halp!
