The Augustus-class cruisers were the EUN's premier force projector and patrol craft since before the Unification Wars. Usually operated in squadrons of five, they were deployed to outlying colonies and established space lanes to provide security. In the event that planet-side policing actions were required, the Augustus was designed to transport and deploy a company of Marines via dropships. However, in their haste to develop a ship capable of providing the necessary security requirements for rapidly expanding colonies, a number "shortucuts" were taken to ensure there were enough ships to bolster and legitimize the fledgling Navy of a unified Earth.
Improvements and upgrades were implemented over the course of the following decades. Yet, with no real threat or enemy to face, these improvements were made to rather trivial components and systems in an effort to improve overall efficiency. Deficiencies in terms of defense and armament were made apparent during the early years of the Unification Wars. Problems with power generation and distribution and maneuverability made them nothing better than sitting ducks in fleet engagements.
In response to these deficiencies, the reorganized Earth Federation Navy pushed for the development of the vastly improved Spartan-class cruisers. However, they weren't too hasty to dismiss the Augustus entirely. With a solid hull and the added capability as a limited troop transport and deployment platform, the Augustus underwent a final refit plan to bring it too its full potential.
In its final Block IV configuration it provides enough firepower to stand toe-to-toe with a Spartan and supplement the Victory's in land assaults.
