Description
The original inspiration for my design of the M5R1 came from the Over Flags in Gundam 00. However, the more I tried playing around with that design, the more limited I felt as to how far I could take it. For the most part, I abandoned the look of the Over Flag in favor of something a bit more traditional. It has actually been a while since I designed a mech in this style. It took me the better part of a week and about three drafts to finally make it to this final version.

As the threat of interplanetary war loomed, the EUN commissioned OmniDefense Systems to come up with a replacement for their aging arsenal of First and Second Gen Armors. At the onset of the Unification Wars, the GT-M5R "Lance" came into service as the EUN's premier front line Combat Armor and the pinnacle of Second Gen Combat Armor technology.

The Lance outclassed every Armor fielded by rival factions, with the exception of AMSec's R-line of Third Gen units. After the war, even with the advantages made apparent by AMSec's Third Gen Armors, the Earth Federation opted to keep the Lance as its main Combat Armor as it proved itself over and over again during the war.

The Earth Federation plans to eventually implement Third Gen technology to newer Armor designs when they fell that the Lance has reached the end of its service life.
