Description
After the steppe invaders overran western Europe, the Muslims territories in Iberia were also ransacked and pillaged by the Kipchaks, however do to sheer distance cities such as Grenada survived the prolonged sieges of the Darkest Ages.

Once order had been restored, the relatively unscathed territories in Ifriquiya did not miss the chance given to them by Allah, seeing that now the Christians of the north were so thoroughly thrashed, the Caliph sent armies north to seize territories long lost in earlier wars. The Christian refugees could not object, and were either forcibly subverted by the Sunni belief system or locked in Dhimmi 'protectorates', little more than walled off villages.

The next three hundred years between the Mongol invasion and the Grenadan-led Iberian Caliphate's discovery of Nuevo Andalus (North America ) in the late 1500's were spent in perpetual war with the Caliphates neighbors, the Mamelukes in Egypt (who actually pried off parts of the empire that Grenada wants back) and solidifying control over its unsettled territories in the north.

After fisherman from the Basque region discovered what they thought was a gargantuan island in the northwest Atlantic, the Caliph sent an exploratory fleet, which discovered pristine land with flush forests and bountiful seas. Colonization began in earnest in OTL New England, with the large-scale influx of settlers (both Muslim and refugee) to the land assisting in the extinction of the native Amerindians through the spreading of plagues and policy of non-cooperation with tribes. The Muslims, although not very well suited to the cold, came to form their own strong bond over time, forming an important role as the Caliphate modernized, secularized, and eventually came to be known as of 1890 as the Iberian Confederation, a hardened and strong nation very much wishing to regain the territories it had lost to its mortal enemy, the Mameluke Sultanate.

(Note; although it doesn't control any of the Holy Cities of Islam and isn't an Islamic theocracy, by art of tradition as the largest surviving Islamic-majority states and arguably the most successful after the Mongolian invasions, the Confederation still considers itself to hold the title of Caliph of Islam, and Grenada is considered the Paris of the non-Mongol Islamic world).

(Note 2; I hope I didn't take up too much territory in the New World, considering I envisioned it being open to anyone who wanted to settle regardless of race or religion and that it would be majority Muslim (thinly spread) anyway.)
