Guide to Role Play

Before we leap into the types of role play and the rules lets discuss what role play (RP) is exactly.
Role play: To play a role. To personify oneself as a separate entity. In short, collaborative story writing.
Role play is often more than just acting as someone else. It can be used as a stress reliever, to help develop original characters: possibilities with collaborative story writing are endless. However, like all games, rules come with them.

We are all Human
Lets face it, while most of us wish to be super man and godly in strength, we are not. This applies to your characters as well. Its no fun to role play with someone who *blocks actions or situations simply because their character is too good for that.

Block/Blocking: To deny a situation or action presented to you or your character. Avoiding the situation all together.

(Example)  *The sky bellows and turns purple, with one last rumble the clouds release a waterfall of rain upon to two girls*
Thrisha: *becomes completely soaked and irritated by the sudden downpour*
Rhonda: *conjured a magical umbrella just in time to avoid getting soaked*

Rhonda blocked the situation. While blocking can sometimes be used for comedic effect, most of the time it ruins the atmosphere the current story teller's plot or idea they had planned.

Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering
One of the many scenarios to play out in an RP are fights. While they can be exciting and fun there are the possibilities your "opponent" doesn't know how to play fair or even goes beyond blocking. What's beyond blocking? God-modding* that's what.

*God-mod: is creating a character who is of an invincible nature and can do anything.

Not only does a god-mod block but they go beyond it to that even if they acknowledge the situation or action against them they either over power it or manage to escape it unscathed.

They're called secrets for a reason
Who here would like a complete stranger they don't know, know everything about them? If you said yes, go see a therapist. Most people don't react well when someone they've never met knows all there is to know about them. This applies to characters as well. Just because you read the character reference sheet or the creator gave you a brief on them doesn't mean your character should know. This is one of the best ways to ruin the mood and surprise to the character's development. It destroys what relationship development the characters could have had. Word of advice, "Play dumb."

(Ex) Malso is really a woman, but the description and author claim that her disguise is fool proof.
Malso: So what, exactly do you want >:[
Reamus: Ooh~ just looking around, nice horses you have here. *suspects that Malso is a woman*

FFF No no no no! Are you trying to be an a-hole? Just play along It's not that hard. You ruin a perfectly good story when you reveal the element of surprise early in the game.

The unspoken Law
The unspoken law that really should be voiced more is to never ever, ever role play another person's character. This is the controlling impression people get similar  to when an older sibling snatches the remote control from you. Unless you have some kind of agreement between the RP partner(s) do not ever do this.

Get involved
What's the point of role playing with someone if you don't have your character in some way be involved with the other or situation? Even if your character is aloof by nature some how some way have them involved even if it's discreet or indirect. People naturally ignore the background characters that just sit there. Ever watch a movie and remember the color of shirt that one extra was wearing in scene 16? No, because he wasn't involved with the situation, so naturally you dismissed him as part of the background. Same goes for RPs. Get involved.

Symbols used in Role Play
The colon ":" most commonly used in script style role plays is used to signify the character is taking action
(Ex) Royen: Oh my bladder lets go!

The asterisk "*" is commonly used to signal action or thought along with adding scenery in script style role play.
(Ex) Seruba: Look out! *ducks behind the boulder as the dragon unleashed a flurry of white hot flames*

Parentheses and brackets "( ) and [ ]" at the end of sentences that are not part of the role play.
(Ex) Reams: This is ridiculous! Can't you think of a better idea? *sits on a toad stool in a huff*
Sero: I'm trying alright <:[
author> did you remember to write up that guide on role play? ]]
author2> fff no I forgot D'l ))

Written Styles of Role Play
There are two common written styles of role pay. Script and Book.
Script is the style I have been using this whole guide for examples. Like the name says, script role play is written how a script would be.
Book style is a bit more elaborate and is written as if it's an excerpt from a novel instead of a script. Often the * and : are not used in book style RPs.

Styles of Role Play
There are hundreds upon thousands of ways to role play. But I'm just going to break it down into two most common. Action/Reaction* RP and *Controlled RP.

Action/Reaction role play is a very courteous style. Two or more authors write their character's action or insinuate an action about to happen to the opposing character, while still giving the other author(s) an option to react.

(Ex) Jordan: you'll pay for that! *leaps and aims to punch straight through Rigby*

See here. The author did not say he hit him, they basically paused the game right before the action caused an effect, giving Author2 a chance to consider his or her options on how to react to the situation. Author2 can decide whether or not Rigby can avoid the attack or be pummeled. However this also means that Author2 has to consider, can Rigby avoid an attack? Just because the action is left open doesn't mean it's a freebee for avoiding it. This is something all Role Players have to consider in order to avoid blocking or god-moding.

Controlled role play is, well, a controlled role play. It's nothing bad, in fact it can be very interesting. Basically one or more authors arrange a setting, atmosphere, and situation then control where the story goes while the participants have their characters react to what ever situations the author(s) present to them.

(Ex) author1> It was a terrible mundane day. The air was heavy with a mildew scent and the sunlight was dim through the tangled canopy. Suddenly a woman's shrill scream echoed through the forest.
author3> Lisa: O_O! D8> what was that?! *clings to James*
author2> James: <:[;; it s-sounded like a woman..

I love this. Even though I don't really need this guide since I'm a.. Well, in my own opinion of myself, good RPer.

Though, I love reading people's guides.
I sometimes learn something new.

Well done!

How about the literacy levels?
It isn't something I've seen here in dA particulary, but I had in other roleplay forums. It basically measures how well and how much you write.

Example: a non-literate rp is quite like what you call the skript rp, with actions between "*" . Here the grammar is not a very important factor, and usually the people who play them tlk lke dis or say "your" instead of "you're". In the forums I roleplay, they are pretty much considered noobs /:
i.e.: "Lets go!" *starts running* "Your fallin behind buddy!"
Btw, sorry if this example sucks but I never play in those xD

On the oposite corner, there are the advanced-literate rps, which are long, LONG posts that can contain from 5 to 10 big paragraphs. The authors describe emotions, settings, senses, and in some extreme cases even start talking about how green the grass is and the meaning of life. This ones are for people who really love to write and read a lot. Also, the gramatic, spelling and general orthography must be perfect

Of course there are some greys bewteen black and white. I consider myself a "literate" roleplayer, meaning my posts have very good grammar and spelling, and the lenght is about 3-5 paragraphs.

Then you should edit the part in the comments where it says "If there's anything you think I should add feel free to say so". Because then that would be just wasting time.

Thank-you for saying this. Sometimes when writing with newbies I have to restrain myself from pummeling them when they make a booboo such as god-modding.
By the by, when one author controls another author's character without permission it is usually known as power-playing.

Interesting ideas here, though I have a few cents to share on the topic of RPing.

Characters of greater power should be allowed only with trust, which of course is built up with experience with the people you RP with. There must be a willingness to concede hits on both sides if the RP is to be enjoyable, and a character losing a battle can actually provide the basis for great character development, provided he/she doesn't die, of course.

If it is in one's character to have the innate ability to indeed summon an umbrella via magical conjuration, than so be it, seeing as how it does not severely detriment the character. At the same time, one should be very careful not to avoid every single attack, as people all make mistakes sooner or later. At least ideally. The statement that we are all human does not necessarily transfer over to characters of an alien or otherwise inhuman nature, be it "lesser" or "greater" for it. Again, much of the quality in an RP is where both sides are willing to follow along with the intentions of the other. Great power must always be balanced with an equal, and relevant weakness. To be unstoppable in physical combat and yet have personality issues only results in one heck of a douchebag OC.

As for god-modding/controlling other characters, I would put the line there.

On the topic of secrets, there is a difference between making everything known on the character sheet, and what a character can realistically know in-character. Ideally, the RPers should use common sense to determine where to stop. In practice, this is often better said than done.

While this post covers the limits that one should consider when making a character, this does not cover personalities. If you're familiar with the term Mary Sue (I prefer the term Special Snowflake), then you know that there are many common potholes that people fall into when making a realistic/enjoyable OC. They have litmus tests that provide a good benchmark and as a natural result, show things to avoid that may be useful for making a good, non-sue character.

Hopefully this will be slightly useful instead of just appearing as rambling. That's my two cents on the topic of RP anyway.

Haha, thank you for the offer but 1) I don't play WoW nor ever intend to and 2) I'm too busy with commissions, managing an RP forum, and hosting OCTs to start a new RP.

Though perhaps you can start an RP thread that gives people a reason to self glorify their character. Like a fight or some kind of silly beauty pageant haha XD

pretty good but the only thing is God-Modding is also when you control someones character without permission. Such as in your example of block when the person says "the two girls get soaked." is viewed by some people as God-Modding. When you go to punch someone you have to say "so and so attempts to punch person b" you have to give them a chance to react.

Just advice from a fellow rp'er. (of course all my rping is done in WoW so there are whole other rules on top of the ones you mentions XD)

Anatomical-Automaton In reply to TtHM [2011-05-30 09:57:30 +0000 UTC]

Rping someone's character,
it's written in the guide as the "Unspoken Law".
I'm aware different groups and severs have different nicknames for such actions, I just broke everything down into basic terms that are easy to comprehend and recognize. Its easy to understand that if you break a law you get in trouble and since I labeled it as unspoken its saying that everyone should know this and if you don't you will look quite silly when you do it.

And since I come from an OCT background, god-modding means an over powering character who's untouchable and poorly written which is why I associated the term with fighting. But in general the term is something people want to avoid being called.

"When you go to punch someone you have to say "so and so attempts to punch person b" you have to give them a chance to react."
... Yeah, I also mention that in the guide too as Action/Reaction RP.

"Of course all my rping is done in WoW so there are whole other rules on top of the ones you mention"
I refrained from putting up walls of rules since each rp group or sever is different in what is and isn't allowed, but what I have up is usually used by most. I also wanted to keep this guide pretty basic and not overwhelming for new comers. Anything extra I just leave up to the RP admins or whoever to brief their members on additional rules.
but.
Honestly though, you're just repeating what I already wrote, so I can't really take any of it as advice :/ but I guess it's nice to know you know the general rules.

(random info)
And lastly, I only RP by chat or forum with original characters. And I never RP game avatars or fanmade characters. (end random info)
