I'm curious.
Fan fiction is a way for aspiring writers to dip their toes into the pool to figure out what it is they like. Admittedly it is playing with other people's characters but I don't understand why you are so against it.
How does this harm you?
You may not enjoy fanfiction and I certainly respect your opinion - I'm just confused as to why you think people shouldn't write them.

1. Stick to drawing
2. Get better at wruiting
3. Write originals
4. Stick to knowing how to breathe. Because apparently, that's all you're good at.

I dunno, there's some good stuff out there. Mainly oneshots, but some serial suff can surprise you.
My stuff? Interesting, but utter dick on the whole.
I do endeavor to write original stuff, but I really haven't gotten anywhere with these projects.
At this point, you'll find it pretty obvious that I am for fan fiction.
And I'll say this: 99.9999% percent of total fanfiction is utter fucking crap. But it doesn't make the concept or the practice crap, just the general writing community- and this is due to most of these people looking for wish fulfillment.
This is true of original fiction, too, but it isn't an oddball concept like fan made fiction, so it's generally glossed over and discounted.
And, yes, I understand even the good stuff will inspire and perpetuate a whole line of bad stuff, but it's a device, a writing forum, like any other subject matter.
So, in the end, supporting it or bitching about it doesn't matter and I just realized I've wasted my time writing this.

If one talks about fanfiction in that light, one much remember the play of Oedipus by Sophicles, one of the super-awesomest plays that would be technically counted as a fanfiction because it's of a Greek myth thingy and all that...

That kid's high off her own farts. I read a biblet of her works and it's really quite awful- and this is coming from the writer of the not-popular-enough-to-be-infamous Pariah's Wasteland.
You can tell in the prose that the author (or authoress if you want gender specificity in your generic nouns) has a high opinion of her "art" and goes out of her way to be as flowery and as "artistic" with the narration/plot/etc. as humanly possible.
Honestly, my shittastic pilot for my fic "Those From Down Below" was awesomer than that shit. I asked a bona fide DD-awarded prose writer to look over it and he/she(I forget at this point) was critical, but also orgasmed all over the damn keyboard about how I wrote out some parts.

you know fanfics taught me how to write stories. it took a long time (4 years) before i was confident enough to write my own ( i never liked how i wrote). And yeah i wrote a lot of them (over 100) and yeah 99% sucked but i liked to explore the psyche of different characters (put this one in this situation and consider how he would squirm) i like or hated i really enjoy to pick on it taught me how to be consistent with a character (going oc was bullshit) if your going to bastardize someones character makes sure it's still the same character instead of a oc with the appearance of a char you like... i hate fanfics now. i have tried to write them still from time to time i never can seem to....it feels like a waste of time unless it's for my friend. especially with so many stories of my own i should be working on now in that time XD
(that is NOT a representation of how i write....i've stood y never using grammar in my posts to people....i still suck at it and it takes me forever)

however
what separates people from either being bumbling buffoons writing masturbation tales or creative writers, is that creative folk tend grow and mature from it instead of mimic it.
Though if you really want to improve your writing and creative assets, take college courses in creative writing and English in general

I like to think i got better (i mean i did start when i was much younger) but meh...not good enough yet.
I'd take classes for writing and art but i can't afford it ( can't even afford colored paper to make my own Christmas decorations this year) anything i do i pretty much do on my own. (i WAS going to go to collage when i turned 18)
Yeah i know it was meant to pick on weeaboos because i like the country for what it is not because i like anime, and i'll say what i did to the person who flamed me for it, i like the weather, architecture, people i've met (many) the sense if humor (which overall is much different than the us from what i've seen) the scenery and food which just isn't done right in the us (like fish and chips) i do like tea time which i had every day when i was around the brits i knew and yeah i do want to go there, and yeah i know it's not perfect and won't be exactly what i assume. i also know that not all of them drink tea etc.
Also doctor who came about 7 years after i wanted to go to England, i just found it this year so yeah XD
but bow ties are cool sometimes.
Now that i look at it, it does kind of seem like the driving force for liking England so i may change my sig......not sure if i care enough heh

I can't afford any classes what so ever. i can't even afford the testing costs for the GED the city i'm in got hit pretty hard by the economy and i can't find a job anywhere. i hate it....

Well.....he/she had a point, you can't know a place unless your there they were kind of rude which i should have expected but it kind of blind sited me because i'd had the sig for so long i had forgotten about it (hadn't even read it in ages)
Aussies tend to be more city folk than outback crock hunters like they tend to tell everyone they can't make bbq...AT ALL they burn and over cook every piece of food that comes in contact with a grill (not that it's HORRIBLE but really not the best),

i was trying to find comparisons in my sig for pokey, anime, sushi and what not. it seems more stupid now than it had before....at least after our conversation the Englishman didn't seem to have anything else to be angry at me for o.o so maybe we came to an agreement?
also most of the Americans i know thinks England well no Europe is a wimp....so i'm not sure about 90% thinking England is perfect....either you know how it really is or your a accent obsessed teenager. or some flag waver with the "Europe is a bunch of dirty hippy wusses!" i have to work with people like that D":
