The issue isn't that the concept of fan fiction is a bad one. It's just that good writers often prefer to invent their own worlds and characters rather than using someone else's.

I guess its just from experience and personal taste that I prefer authors to write their own stories and characters. Not adopt someone else.

I enjoy both. I think they each have their merits. I mean to be able to fit into the mind of the previous author and do the original justice while bringing your own ideas to the picture is its own challenge.
