Interesting opinion.
However, that really depends on the definition of "good". I don't write fanfiction myself, and for the most part, plan not to.
But I've seen some fan fictions with a clever author written in decent English and a story hundreds of people read and enjoy. How is that not a good thing for people who like the original?

Oh well I never looked there, all I could find were the overly defensive 'not every fanfiction sucks' people.
In any case I care remarkably little about it, I've even attempted one yet failed (it's a failure if it stops having anything to do with the story and the characters are totally different right?) and that was only because my friend and I were trying to fix a terrible book. I was only doing it to get fans (oops)

Fan fiction is good for letting an idea out. However, it's not good to take it too srs, like most folks in it do.
So it's good to casually go at it, perhaps update more than randomly, and end up with a good amount of practice writing and shiz.

See I agree with you on the practice part being its only use. I am merely sick of seeing solely fan-fiction and fan-art on DA. Basically photography is the only free zone (excluding cosplay).

Try telling that to Virgil, who wrote the Aeneid as a sequel to the Iliad. People have been telling stories based off of another person's stories since the beginning of time. Let people have their harmless self-indulgent fun, it's not hurting anyone. Don't like it, keep scrolling or hit the back button.

If one posts on the internet, it is in a public space/domain therefore one is allowed to comment upon it. If one does not wish to receive criticism one should not be posting on the internet.

Says the person who just told me to keep my opinions to myself. You're such a hypocrite. I don't care if I get criticism, but if your going to preach to me not to state an opinion then hide behind the fact that "it's the internet, it's public" makes you a jerk. And if you're going to use that logic you should tell all the fan-fic writers who I am supposedly offending to take their stories down because "if one does not wish to receive criticism one should not be posting on the internet."

I never said you were not entitled to an opinion.
It's a two way street. On one hand if you don't want criticism don't post on the internet, on the other hand no one is making you read it. The first applies to a singular piece, while the second applies to a whole genre. You do not like fan fiction then don't read something that is clearly marked as fan fiction, if you did you have no reason to complain. On the other hand if it is something that you normally read and would click on then you can comment on it. I expected a tutorial, therefore I commented, simple as that. But I wouldn't say anything to a site that clearly is intended to mock fan fiction. See there's quite a difference.
And yes, I have told fan fic writers that if they wish to not receive criticism they should not post on the internet.

But you did tell me to keep my opinion to myself. So I'm not sure what the message is you're going for with that. It's not constructive criticism, you're just telling me not to express myself. That seems a little contradictory to the point of an art site. :/ I think you're going to have your work cut out for you if you mean to lecture everyone on dA who's made something mildly offensive. If you don't like my tutorial then take your own advice and keep scrolling or hit the back button. Stop raining on my "harmless self-indulgent" parade. Would it be better if I had rules on how to make offensive fan fics? It would be a proper tutorial then. Oh! Or if I titled it "how to smoke a cigarette" and then said don't do it. I get that you don't like fanfiction. It's common knowledge that there's a TON of crappy fanfiction, but not all of it is bad. It's rather rude to make this type of "tutorial."

To be frank, I'm not the person who is going around and replying to months-old posts on DeviantArt. And my priorities are just fine, thanks. I can do whatever I like with every day. I don't feel the need to spend an entire day mourning people who would probably rather that others enjoy their lives.

There really is a market for everything. It's amazing what people will buy, but at least what I peddle has a purpose. I'm all for teaching others how to write. Fan fiction just provides a fun way to learn. The used panties thing is just creepy, but I guess there are worse things that could be done with used panties. Not... that I want to consider it. I'm a little afraid now.
