AndrewDeFelice — Godzilla vs. Tiamat

Description To me, this would be the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of monster fights (two great monsters that fight great together). In the red corner, we have Tiamat -- primordial dragon goddess who, according to D&D lore, is the mother of all evil dragons. And in the blue corner, we have the delightfully belligerent Godzilla -- bastard spawn of the nuclear age and probably the only monster brave/crazy enough to get all up in Tiamat's face(s). Hope everyone has as much fun viewing this piece as I did in creating it.

Sketched and rendered in Photoshop and critiques are welcome. Also, I'm curious to see who you think would win in this kind of fight so feel free to leave comments.

My sister has always had something of a range of tastes. She had a few Barbie things and My Little Pony, but she also had some D&D monster figures and He-Man figures. But yeah, I inherited the monster stuff when she felt old for it.

pretty badass but I think godzilla's mouth is too big and his snout is too short, otherwise an amazing picture.

But if that thing is really female...I might want to ship them together...

Hah! Yes, nobody takes a pounding like Big G. And Tiamat is pretty much always depicted as female (though, being a goddess, she can appear as a male of any species if she chooses). My friend Jason once commented that these two monsters would at first get into a seriously down-and-dirty fight ... until the hardcore love-making started and made things REALLY awkward for the already traumatized city-folk.

I know, I feel the same way! If it was Godzilla and something I didn't love, you can be sure I would have made an illustration of Godzilla kicking that character's butt across the planet.

Nuclear breath, Atomic Pulse, Regeneration, Spiral Heatray...vs 5 different breath weapons, Spellcasting, 2 more heads than King Ghidorah...and limited Regeneration of her own if I remember right.

Big G's actually demonstrating some above-average strategy by throttling that White head...extreme cold is one of the few things that slows his roll a bit, though I'm sure the Blue's pending blast of high voltage will put him right back in a mood. Honestly, given the workout King Ghidorah always gives Godzilla, two extra heads, working arms & plenty of breath-weapon variety should let Tiamat hold her own for a while.

Plenty to dig about this pic beside the very concept, including (a) the scale-balance...Tia's larger, but not obscenely so; (b) the close-quarters mauling...you'd be surprised how bloodless many kaiju-combat pics are; and (c) the spiffy dust/ember clouds.

AndrewDeFelice In reply to geekspace [2012-05-20 16:40:41 +0000 UTC]

Funny thing is that I wasn't really picturing Godzilla using much strategy, the white head happened to be the first part he was able to grab. If anything, it's probably Tiamat who would be more of the strategist – running one of the Nine Hells for a time in the D&D multiverse while planning extensive invasions of the world of Krynn indicates someone incredibly talented at multi-tasking. Godzilla, in the other hand, is a rush-in-and-smash monster (picture the Incredible Hulk with a breath weapon) who overruns his enemies through sheer savagery.

So glad you liked this image and that it inspired storytelling on how the fight would go.

Indeed, Tiamat sports the general advantages of sapience & centuries of experience, though those only carry so far in a down-and-dirty scrap with foes of similar stature & resilience. With a little prep time in her favor, things would get painfully interesting for most opponents.

Perhaps I should've said "strategic by Godzilla's standards," since the 90's version you seem to be referencing here was straightforward blast-and-bash full stop, with a penchant for letting his deathray do most of the walking. Back in the mid-70's, on the other hand, he was basically a Smart Hulk(TM) with a black-belt, decent off-the-cuff improvisational skills, and a fresh wacky trick per film. Personally, while I could give or take the plot-device gimmicks, I enjoyed Superhero!Goji's penchant for punch-ups.

Speaking of which, nice job beefing up Big G's forearms-some of those suits were so bulky that he seemed to have next to no reach outside the tail & nuke-breath.

You caught me. I grew up with the 70's Godzilla and the corny gimmicks but found myself falling in love all over again with the force-of-nature 90's version that really wasn't as interested in saving the world as he was in getting in the face of something new to fight. I figure that version would have given a much nastier fight to the Queen of Darkness than the earlier one.

geekspace In reply to AndrewDeFelice [2012-05-21 02:17:23 +0000 UTC]

To be fair, Hero!Goji could be surprisingly hardcore at times. There's this scene near the end of his final film ('till the 1984 reboot) where we see him stagger through a horrendous barrage from Mechagodzilla just to get up close & start pounding. Offhand, however, 90's Godzilla does strike me as more likely to go nuclear and/or go for the throat.

OK epic fan of Godzilla and Im still a D&D player after starting 26 years ago. That would be one major battle but given both of those monsters track records, Godzilla wins hands down.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AndrewDeFelice In reply to vikking1 [2012-03-14 01:29:11 +0000 UTC]

I feel the same way about the results myself! Of course, I have friends who think the edge goes to Tiamat since she's a D&D goddess and would have access to extensive divine and arcane magic. Yeah right, a nuclear monster who can ignore tank shells and missiles is REALLY in danger from a few Cause Serious Wounds spells.

That and Tiamat has been defeated by heroes several times while Godzilla was only defeated once in the 50's and giving rise to the more powerful God Killing Godzilla.

to be honest and sorry to correct you even though it d&d tiamat is the anciant babylonian primordial godess of chaos and destruction

AndrewDeFelice In reply to demonicthehedgehog [2012-03-14 01:24:24 +0000 UTC]

Hi, Dem. No apologies necessary. Yes, I do know about the original Babylonian goddess being slain by the god Marduk (who is said to have used the weapons of the other gods in addition to his own in order to defeat her). I was just using the D&D version because I thought her image was more believable as a Godzilla opponent (the primordial Babylonian goddess-dragon would probably have wiped the floor with him. lol).

All the best to you.

Funny you should mention that. My friends and I recently had a discussion about them when we came to the conclusion that if they never went back home, they clearly stayed there. Which meant they more than likely continued to have adventures. Which, when you consider the additional 30 years of adventuring they would have been on and the experience they accrued, each and every one of them is probably some epic level character right now.
