The Two-headed Beast. Its true name is Tsuguo.

The Nue bears the head of a monkey, limbs like a tiger’s and a thick, well-built body with large wings at its shoulders. Its tail, if it can be called that, resembles a long snake, ending in the head of a slim cobra. The length of creature’s spine is covered with snake scales, its limbs have faint stripes and it has a mane of shaggy fur about its head and shoulders. Its wings are useless for powered flight, but hold poisonous barbs which can be shot out at random. Its collar-marks are visible around the throat below each head.

The Nue’s powers are best described as being the use of induced fear. While he is a proficient brawler with very big teeth (monkey) and holds a vicious bite (snake), he also has the ability to change into a dark, gaseous cloud. Any foe caught in the cloud or its shadow is immediately afflicted by nightmares and vivid hallucinations, leaving them helpless to the creature’s poison barbs.
This power is wielded at a price, the creature’s host is subject to intense night terrors for weeks, even months on end upon using it, often leading to loss of health and even sanity.

Unlike its kin-beasts, the Nue has been described as being of two minds rather than one. Previous hosts claimed to find the creature literally arguing with himself and often having to talk to each head individually. The monkey-head has been described as being very grave, but reasonable and the viper-head being more cynical and confrontational. Gaining the power to use the Beast’s abilities means the host must convince both heads that using it is the only option left. In return, the Nue argues for the consequences of its use and the after effects the host will have to deal with. Almost none of the Nue’s hosts have ever managed to achieve the right to use these powers to their fullest.

On a side note, most of the Beast’s hosts have described the Nue as having a lovely singing voice (especially when he does a duet with himself). The fact is, the only way to rid the host of their night terrors is for the Nue to sing to them, but like all things with the Nue, this is something that must be earned.

Many theorize that since all the other Beasts, save the Raijuu, are of one mind despite having multiple heads, that the Nue might actually be pulling an elaborate ruse on its hosts. And they’re exactly right.
To the Nue’s credit, no host or any other human has managed to truly realize his little game, or break his facade. As far as Tsuguo himself is concerned, keeping this complex masquerade going, even to his very last breath, is completely worth it if it means the little ninja bastards will actually think things through.
