Due to popular demand, a tutorial for making your own pair of spats, part 2! This is how to sew together your spats once you've made your pattern. These directions make basic spats- you can do a lot to this simple version to make them fancier and more personal.
Part 1 can be found here .
I've never made a tutorial before, so if anything doesn't make sense, just ask and I'll try to explain it as best I can! I've been sewing for a long time and sometimes I forget that some things aren't obvious to everyone, so if I left out anything, feel free to call me out on it.
I didn't take pictures when I made the spats in the first place, so there aren't a lot of pics. Part 2 involves drawings, but I hope it still makes sense.
If you use this tutorial, please send me pics of your spats! I'd love to see it. ^_^
Oh, and this is what a seam allowance is, if you didn't know.
Some spats made with this tutorial! Give 'em a look:

Well, a very simple pair of spats is relatively easy! Especially if you have them stop higher up on the boot - mine go way down over the toes but you can just do sort of around the ankle. Then it's mostly square and less complicated. You can also use a simpler type of closure. For instance, just add ribbons to tie shut instead of sewing buttonholes, or you could even use something like velcro if you liked!

I think I might make a pair to cover the parts of my boots that have surface damage.

That is an excellent idea! I'm pretty sure protecting shoes from minor damage is what they were originally invented for (although I'm not sure on that one), so you're definitely in good company there!

I bought a leather pair that may have been used in world war 1 recently and I think I might try to make a pair from old worn-out boots for a more steampunk effect. Did you know that spats made for protection are called "Gaiters"?

I like the weathered effect older gaiters have. I recently bought a secondhand pair of spats in a pretty goldy-sand colour. I just need to find shoes to match them now.

Wow, sorry for the late reply! I did know that, actually. My friend is a geologist and she wears gaiters in the field. Modern gaiters aren't as pretty, though!

I'm using this, but I thought I'd add a little note as to pressing!
It helps to let the curve lay flat if you trim the seam and also to clip it along the curves (inside and outside)
You might know this, but I thought I'd say so anyway.

I do know that (I've been sewing for well over a decade)! I just meant that ironing curves is difficult if you don't have an ironing ham (which most people don't. I don't, although I really want one).

I actually am making some calf length spats I planned on posting pictures of. It's been very easy to follow, I wish I had used felt first though as my first scrap fabric was not stiff enough.
I should have pictures of them up in a a week or two, and will gladly credit you for the tutorial.

Thank you! Sewing is one of those things that's really simple in theory, but a lot harder in practice... But luckily practice does make perfect! You should totally give it a try.

I think the main explanations that are confusing are the ones that are in part 1. The pictures are a HUGE help, but it's a little confusing about how exactly you're tracing out the basic form of the spats on the scrap fabric. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense. I probably shouldn't be telling you what's confusing when I'm confusing as well

Animus-Panthera In reply to ZexionVampire [2011-05-18 03:15:06 +0000 UTC]
It's kind of hard to explain- I literally just taped fabric to my boot and drew lines where I wanted the seams to be. It's a bit hard to do on yourself, so you can either get someone you trust to do it for you, or stuff your shoes (with newspaper or something) and do it that way.
Just tape the fabric on so it covers everywhere you want there to be spat, then draw on the shape of the spat. When you take it off and flatten it out, you should have the basic shapes. Then you smooth out the lines. If one side is going to cross over, you have to add a line where you want it to cross, cut it out, and redraw those two pieces, adding a bit where they cross over.
Does that make sense? If not I can try again! And let me know if you have any other questions. ^_^

I hope so. The local fabric stores mostly have gaudy fabrics, but I'll have to look around again.

Yeah, fabric stores aren't what they used to be... You could try going to thrift stores, too, see if you can't find something made out of a fabric you like that's big enough to use.

I may have to try thrift stores in Denver. Aurora thrift stores aren't that good. The pieces with any promise are usually on the prom dress from hell.

Sounds like a good plan! And hey, if they're cheap, buy 'em anyways and just use the bits you want. I have a friend who'll buy clothes just for the buttons and findings sometimes.

Exactly. I'd still go to Denver for some better stuff.
I need a sewing dummy.

Animus-Panthera In reply to Blue-Demon-Hybrid [2011-04-22 00:42:34 +0000 UTC]
You can totally make those by tape casting. Basically, wear something relatively form fitting and have someone wrap you in saran wrap, and then tape (duct tape would probably work best). It's not the best dress form ever, but it's way cheaper than buying one. If you're really, really lucky, I've heard of people getting them used for good prices, so maybe you'll luck out!
