Description
A quick thing I made.Crocuta spelaea was a sister species to the extant spotted hyena C. crocuta. The two diverged some 2.5 million years ago, and C. spelaea is distinguished by its larger size and more robust proportions.
The cave hyena inhabited much of Eurasia during the Pleistocene, and an eastern variety, C. (spelaea) ultima occured in China and Eastern Russia.
To make this I used an extant hyena skeletal but adjusted the limb proportions based on ratios from the literature, to better match the limb structure of the hyena.
Interestingly, this average C. spelaea was about the same height as C. crocuta, however we know they were about 60% heavier on average, which speaks to how muscle-bound this creature was.
The distal limb elements were shorter and more robust than in extant spotted hyenas, which indicates it was poorly adapted to long-distance running by comparison. Instead evidence suggests it relied more heavily on scavenging, and its stocky limbs aided it to carry carcasses away to eat in safety. Nonetheless they still hunted prey, and competed viciously with other predators, particularly hominins in Pleistocene north Eurasia.
An average specimen would weigh 80-90kg, with the largest weighted specimen at 103kg (I suspect they could exceed this).
Height at the withers is about 80cm.
Much can be said on this creature, but that's all folks.
