Description

Hey everyone!  It's been a while since I've made a Pokemon. I really enjoyed making this guy and I love how he turned out!  I'm planning on making the other starter Pokemon as well and maybe re-making Pikachu?  We shall see.

So this pattern is pretty similar to my "Derpy Pooh" pattern   but with some changes and of course the addition of the bulb (Is it just me or does it totally look like garlic?).  He ended up being about 6 inches long.  All the details (eyes, spots, claws) are needle felted on and I managed not to stab myself this time!

As usual, let me know if I've made any errors!  And since I don't own this character, please don't sell the finished product and please credit me should you use or reference this pattern!  Much appreciated and happy crocheting!

Step 2: (This step is for the leaves at the top of the bulb.  Holding the bulb upside down, work in the outer loops of the second to last row from Step 1)

-Sc around (12)
-[Sl st, hdc inc] around (18) <--This step makes the leaves at the top of the bulb wavy
-FO

Note:  After attaching the bulb to the body, I stretched yarn over the surface to divide it into 6 segments.  I chose to use 2 strands of yarn twisted together so it would be more stable, but whatever works!

Do you remember what colors you used for your bulbasaur. I am assuming you used worsted weight yarn. I love the finished product and can't wait to make one myself. This has to be the best looking bulbasaur croshet I have seen.

I did use worsted weight yarn.  I don't remember the color that I used though (I think I bought this color on clearance).  I've seen pretty similar colors at craft stores though, so I don't think you should have problems finding something close to it.  Thank you very much for the compliment!  I'd love to see yours when you're done!

No problem!  I should probably specify that in the pattern  All the details including the claws are made of wool that has been needle felted onto the surface.

OMG I didn't know you got a DD for this! This Bulbasaur is just... beautifull and amazing!!

I have a question though... I'm trying to figure out how to make the eyes out of needle felt... Is it hard to learn? How do you attach the eyes to the head? You neddle through with the special neddle-felting neddle? ((OMG so many neddles lol))

Thanks so much!  Yep, it was a very nice surprise!

There are a lot of tutorials on Youtube if you search "needle felting".  I needle felt directly onto the crocheted surfaces.  It's tricky at first but it's definitely do-able with practice

wow! it looks so good like the real bulbasaur, and so cute ^^. The moment I saw it I wanted to make it (I started crocheting about 1 month ago), so I was really happy to see that you included a description on how to make it. But I have a question. What do you mean when you say: "FO"? And how do you attach the different parts in such a nice way? when I am trying to put them together it looks real weird. Thanks in advance for any advice and again such a nice bulbasaur!

aphid777 In reply to love-the-name-lily [2014-03-30 03:04:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!  FO stands for "fasten off".  Also, the trick to attaching all the parts is to keep him on a flat surface so that you can tell where to sew the pieces on.  I usually have to re-do it a few times to get it to look the way I want  It might help to sew the pieces on only part way at first so that you can fix the positions if needed.  I hope that helps!

I've heard really good things about Planet June's tutorials: www.planetjune.com/ .  Otherwise, searching for specific stitches or techniques on Youtube woulld work too.  For 3-D stuff, you should for sure learn how to do slip stitches, single crochet stitches, single crochet increases and decreases, and working in rounds.  That will cover about 95% of the patterns out there to make 3-D toys  Once you've got the basics down, there are a lot of free patterns for all skill levels on sites such as Ravelry.com that you can practice with.  Hope that helps!

Hi! I love your work thanx so much for the patterns would you mind explaining how you needle felt the eyes onto the amigurumi? I've watched youtube tutorials on needle felting but they all seem to be about how to felt an entire doll... or little hearts and things. Would be so much appreciated! I'm starting my first one today

Hi!
can you tell me where you found those tutorials for the needle felting eyes?
I'm making this adorable bulbasaur, but I'm really afraid of doing somemistakes in the eyes and destroy my art
i just found tutorial for amigurumi's hair in needle felting... But thos eyes are full of detaisl and so cute and tiny, I really don't know how to do them
thanks! ^^

MVRysis In reply to CamillaPCS [2014-03-23 13:22:03 +0000 UTC]

Sjoe   the tutorials were for needle felting to make like little hearts and things (like separate objects, not onto other work) and then somewhere in aphid's older work I read she layered the wool roving on top and just worked in layers to get different colors soooo.... taking that info into account I just experimented a bit and found you can needle felt directly onto the amigurumi dolls. So how I did mine is I drew onto the doll with white chalk the shape of the eyes and then used it as a outline (the chalk washes off with a bit of water if you make mistakes) and then you just put the wool roving, I call it fluff, where you want it and start poking it. Very important: work with small pieces of fluff at a time, I found I needed a lot less than I thought I did.

To do outlines I pulled out a long thin piece, almost like a strand of yarn, twisted it to get it compact and then just started poking at one end and making my way round where it must go. For nails and toes roll up a small little ball and then start poking.
I also started with the other things (the toes and the patches on his body) to get the hang of needle felting because this was my first time ever trying it and by the time I got the the eyes I knew how to do it.
One last tip: the needle goes all the way through the feet and arms very easily when doing the toes and nails and it hurts like crazy poking your fingers with the needle. Be very careful!

Good luck! I hope you manage it!
