I've been working with a similar concept in my painting classes the past half year!
I made different cards with on them a landscape, a period in time or theme, a subject and three different ways to paint it
I came up with totally different things then I normally would. You can see them on my dev if you want to

I don't have the cards on there, I only have them in RL
But at the first painting of every series I've explained what I had to combine.
Par example, in the ice series I had to combine Icemountains as a landscape, Plants as a subject, the middle-ages as a theme and then one painting under water, one on land and one in the sky. I make each painting in an hour and ten minutes max.
