Description "Don't worry, Junior. It's not all fancy office clothes and paperwork. This is just what I have to wear for the concert coverup."

"I know," Russell giggled, "You had like sixty fangirls rocking your normal look in the crowd. My dad has all three editions of your album, by the way."

Miko shot a victorious look over the boy's head at Jack, who rolled his eyes playfully and hefted the crate of energon. "You do know he's too young to recruit, right?" he asked.

"Raf was 12!" Miko defended, "Give it two years, we'll make it work!" She elbowed Russell and grinned. "Just make sure to ask for Nakadai's Wreckers. You don't want to get stuck with the Science Squad or Dinoforce."

Jack paused. "You know," he said casually, "I think I've said something before about you not calling the Dual Tribes Settlement "dinoforce"."

"You have," Miko agreed, "I ignored you."

"Ah, that explains it then." He shifted his weight and loaded the crate into the cargo unit the unit truck was set to tow.

Miko bent over to stage-whisper to Russell, "At least in my squad, you won't get chucked over a wall for questioning orders."

"That was one time, Miko! One time!" Jack hollered from across the yard.

"You threw someone over a wall?!" Russell laughed.

"No," the man mumbled, rubbing his beard, "I'm the one who got thrown over a wall."

This got Optimus's attention, and he leveled a hard look at Storm Soldier. The large mech shrugged gamely.

"Well if you're going to tell that story," he said dryly, "Don't stop there. Go on, inform the mite what you did afterwards."

Agent Darby flushed red and muttered something unintelligible.

"He ripped up part of a communications array and flung it at my head." Storm Soldier translated cheerfully. "Told me that if all I'd wanted out of our bargain was a replacement Starscream, I was out of luck."

"Oh Jackson," Optimus sighed, clearly torn between pride and exasperation at the pair of them.

"Were you mad?" Russell asked meekly.

"Hardly!" Storm Soldier snorted. "It was the first real fighting spirit he'd shown in weeks!"

"And now we have a system," Jack hurriedly interjected, "I don't interrupt him in front of the Tripredacus council, and he doesn't throw me over walls in the middle of meetings."

Optimus still kept a close watch on Storm Soldier for the rest of the afternoon. Jack privately thought Agent Nakadai warranted more attention, as she'd very nearly convinced Russell to apply for an internship with Unit E by the end of the day.

XD I know, lots of people don't see it. So glad to expose you to it.

Always wanted a RID Prime crossover. But it's fifty years later, and the kids would be dead, or nearly dead. Unless they were given cyborg parts.

Miko: Your dads a riot.
Russel: Really? I mean...(shrugs casually) yeah, he's cool.
(Miko winks at Denny, who's giving her a hppay thumbs up, as he overheard.)

On Twitter last year, the guy running the show said it had only been 3 years since Prime (which makes Bee's failure to contact Raf all the weirder, honestly), and on the tfwiki it was mentioned that originally Jack was going to cameo in season one.
Did they change their minds again to make it fifty years?

I don't know, but if they can have starscream appear. Let the kids appear!!

Also, Cybertron is a bit advanced and recovered for just three years.

"Hey, uh, Mr. Storm Soldier sir?"Β
The voice that was both hesitant and eager at the same time pulled Storm Soldier's attention to the ground. The smallest human, a youth barely out of his sparkling frame, Russell, he remembered belatedly, was staring up at him eagerly.Β
"What do you want human?" Storm Soldier growled down at him even as he glanced around uneasily. It had not escaped his notice that the youth's father was subtly keeping Russell away from him. But all of the mature sentients were out of sight.
"I, um, I have a question sir?" Russell grinned up at him.
Storm Soldier glared down at the human, hoping that would scare him away but the little scraplet was persistent.
"You may ask," Storm Soldier finally conceded.Β
Russell grinned at the victory and scrambled up to a higher perch to watch the large Cybertronian cleaning his weapon. "So when you said that it was the first fighting spirit Agent Darby," Russell stumbled at the disgusted wince that crossed Storm Soldier's face at the name but didn't understand it so he plunged on, "that Jack had shown in weeks. Did you mean that he had been feeling depressed, or had he just been lazy?"
Russell nearly fell off of his perch when Storm Soldier suddenly stood and paced away a few steps in a fury.
"What makes you think you have any right to ask such a question?" the large mech snarled out harshly.
Russell blinked up at him, thinking that this might not have been the best idea. "Um, well, I-"
"Speak and defend yourself human," Storm Soldier glanced over one protruding shoulder at the boy and there might have been a hint of humor in his optics.
"Jack brought it up!" Russell finally blurted out. "And I think it is way more likely that he was sad and depressed. Because he doesn't act like he would get lazy and I thought that I could...well I mean I help cheer up the Autobots here. I'm pretty good at it. I thought I could cheer him up if he needed it."
Storm Soldier turned and faced the little human fully for a long, uncomfortable, and silent moment. "Do you think you even have the capacity to understand the trauma that Vanguard has experienced?" He finally asked.
"Well no," Russell admitted with a shrug. "Dad says that we might never understand what a warrior has gone through. But that we really don't have to, because you don't need to know all the dirty details to show compassion." Russell grinned. "Everyone likes chocolate chip cookies."Β
Storm Soldier considered him for another long moment and then slowly nodded. "As you say." He rumbled. "You do not need the dirty details." and your father would probably have a fit if I told you "But as you have surmised Vanguard was grievously distressed. A show of affection would not be misplaced." A mischievous smile played across Storm Soldier's faceplates. "Here is what I suggest."

Awhile later Jack stumbled into their temporary sleeping quarters and blinked, trying to process what he was seeing.
"Do you like it?" An eager voice called out from behind him. "Fixit and me found every one of them right here in the scrapyard. And don't worry. They're all clean!"
Jack blinked over at Russell and then back at the small mountain of stuffed animals that was covering his bunk and then back at those bright and eager eyes.
"This was very nice of you," he finally settled on saying.
"Well don't just stand there!" Russell ordered. "Try it out!"Β
Jack suppressed a groan and climbed onto the pile. It was...surprisingly comfortable...familiar even, but he couldn't put his finger on why. Still he snuggled down into the pile and assured Russell it was wonderful.Β
"Just one more thing," Jack spoke up as Russell was about to leave. "Would you take a message to Storm Soldier for me?"
"Sure thing!"Β
"Larger mass equals larger target," Jack murmured.
"Okay..." Russell blinked in confusion, but as the agent was well asleep now he shrugged it off and headed outside.Β

"Many things you are, Megatronus, but subtle was never one of them."
The gentle words did not mask the shrewd, questioning gaze that made the old warrior feel as though his naked spark were being sifted and weighed.
"Is that a rebuke?" he asked, warily watching Prime for signs of a lecture about the proper way to interact with human sparklings.
"It is not." Optimus stepped closer, just enough so that their shoulders touched. He watched the humans huddled next to a small campfire outside of Denny's trailer and smiled, a little sadly. "I...owe you my thanks, Megatronus."

A barely perceptible wince crossed the larger mech's face at the pronunciation of the name. "Your thanks? What could you possibly have to thank me for?" he asked with a touch more bitterness than he'd intended.
Optimus nudged him slightly, nodding in the direction of the trailer. "Look at him," he said softly. "During my time in the Realm of the Primes, I worried for each of the friends -- the family -- that I had left behind. Yet I knew that Ultra Magnus would look after the Wreckers, and Miko, diligently, as I had asked of him. And I knew that Ratchet would continue to keep and mentor Rafael as though he were his own sparkling, just as he has done since Rafael's unfortunate encounter with you."
There was neither blame nor condemnation in his voice, but Storm Soldier felt a cold shudder at the reminder nonetheless. Optimus continued, seemingly unaware of his companion's discomfort.
"I did, at times, fear for Jackson. I knew -- as I am certain that you now know -- that he has within him a tendency to look for a...a role model, of sorts. Someone to emulate."

"A father." Storm Soldier corrected him, almost too softly to be heard. "Not a commander. That is what you were--" he huffed "--are to him. I am aware."
He followed Optimus's gaze to where Vanguard was watching the noisy cheer of his comrades in silence, partially obscured in the flickering shadows.

"I," the reverberating voice replied gently, "Am no longer the only one."

Storm Soldier did not answer. He dared not.

Optimus turned to look Storm Soldier in the optics. "I see much of you in Jackson."
Storm Soldier reacted as though he had been struck. "Then I have failed him."

Optimus frowned. "Why do you assume that I speak of Megatron, and not Megatronus?" he asked pointedly. "I see in him a strength of will that refuses to be broken by adversity. I see a heart that rises up against injustice, but has learned from the example of those who have come before that he must not be rash in his actions."
"He may have always been so." Storm Soldier turned away from the sight of the humans around the fire. "Or he learned those traits from you, Optimus Prime."
"As I learned them from a young revolutionary, long ago?" Optimus countered, and Storm Soldier did not meet his gaze, almost afraid of the compassion he knew he would see. "You have changed, M-" Optimus stopped suddenly, and understanding dawned in his face. "Storm Soldier.Β You are not who you were when I was...alive. Jackson does not place his trust in others so easily, and yet he watches you the way he once did me. Think on that, brother."

It was not until the Prime had moved away to speak to Bumblebee that Storm Soldier finally answered.Β
"I do think on it...brother. More than you know."

It was a few days after their conversation that Storm Soldier noted something...perplexing. Denny Clay had been watching him closely. Specifically Denny had been watching his interactions with Jack. While the adult human didn't exactly relax around him he did cease actively steering Russel away from Storm Soldier. In fact it seemed that the father was encouraging his son to spend more time with Storm Soldier and Jackson. Storm Soldier wondered at the change, ever since the incident with Bumblebee Denny had been protective of his offspring, but didn't comment. The child knew how to stay out of their was and was occasionally helpful. He did eventually catch a snippet of conversation between Denny and Fixit.Β
"..Sure he's a little intimidating but I've never been the best father figure myself," Denny was explaining morosely as he helped Fixit with some fiddly wiring under the consol. "I try to do my best and besides, it is always good to get a different perspective on things."
"I see." Fixit replied. "You expect Russell to learn by observing them." The minibot paused and tilted his helm to the side. "But do yo expect him to learn how to be a son or a feather - bother - "
Storm Soldier had stepped back quickly, his processor skipping and his spark tightening. He had only just wrapped his mind around the concept that Vanguard was watching, observing, learning...that others, ones he had not even considered might be doing the same....it was a heady thought.

By far the most unexpected result of the outsiders' time in the scrapyard was that Sideswipe seemed to watch them the most. He kept the inane, petulant stream of complaints and boasts up near-continuously, but it was obvious enough to anyone who had spent more than a few weeks with the younger mech that there was more going on behind his optics.
When Bumblebee found himself growing frustrated with a battle simulation that just wasn't working, and Optimus stopped what he was doing to place a hand on the back of the Lieutenant's head and gently encourage him to continue, Sideswipe watched.
When Drift kicked up a terrific squall because Jetstorm and Slipstream had decided to emulate their favorite human tv show and what were you thinking and you could have traumatized your t-cog, Jetstorm and By the Allspark, I had better not see either of you trying this againΒ and It is fortunate for you both that despite your foolishness you are unharmed, hastily covering concern with bluster, Sideswipe watched.
When the Commander of the Wreckers spontaneously called the remains of the Alchemor's comm center just to see if one of his had checked in -- quickly confirmed by the boisterous Agent Nakadai -- Sideswipe observed, but surprisingly said nothing.
When Denny scooped up Russell one evening and set him on his shoulders, joking that they were the Combiner "Human-tron", come to terrorize all naughty Minicons who wouldn't go to sleep, Sideswipe, for once, did not join the mischief that followed.

One evening, Grimlock found the red speedster leaning against the fence, watching the new arrivals adding reinforcement to the scrapyard walls.
"That beam is considerably heavier than it appears, Jackson," Optimus cautioned, "You should not lift it alone."
"It's alright, Optimus," the Headmaster was quick to assure him, "I can do it."
"It is not a matter of whether you can," the elder stressed, "But of whether you should."
"Listen to Optimus, Vanguard," Storm Soldier added from the Prime's other side, where he was easily carrying two such beams. "If you strain the gears in your arms, you'll have no one to blame but yourself."
Jack replied with something reluctant but respectful in the Predacon language, and waited for Bumblebee before lifting the beam. Prime and Storm Soldier exchanged meaningful looks, the former looking almost smug and the latter looking as though -- if he had been some decades younger -- he might've been tempted to playfully slug the former. Sideswipe turned away from the scene.

"Hey buddy," Grimlock blinked when the smaller Autobot walked right into him. "You've been all mopey for weeks! You gonna keep walkin' into people? Or you gonna say what's wrong?"
Sideswipe shrugged nonchalantly, but his tone was a little more serious than usual. "Nothin'. Just..." He glanced at his own reflection in the shimmering red finish of his arm. "Just remembering someone I wish I'd said goodbye to, that's all."
Grimlock nodded sagely. "I get that. At least, I think I do." After a moment's contemplation, Grimlock admitted, "I don't remember if I have a family on Cybertron. Or if they miss me."
Sideswipe pasted on a fake smile and punched the Dinobot lightly. "Well that's why you have us. C'mon, Grim. Let's go bug Strongarm."

If she did a tribute, given her style, it probably was without words. Just swells of music from energetic and heroic to slow and contemplative, everything she ever felt around the old warrior, summed into one rising crescendo that abruptly died, replaced by a simple, seven note melody that rang out over the crowd long after her fingers had left the strings of her guitar.
