Description
Opinion wanted! Do you think that having the SFM ponies with eye refraction like this is better, or not really needed? It does remove some of the "cartoonish look" the eyes give them now, but I find it kinda neat.Decided this morning to play around with the eyes of the pony models. Took a couple hours to figure things out, but have at least some kind of working eye refraction on the ponies. The problem is it requires modifying the textures and recompiling the model.
Rainbow is using eye refraction, while Twilight is there to show the way they are now. Had to use Flash as GIFs killed the quality.
As I was only doing testing, Rainbow's left eye was the only one modified, therefore had to close the right.

I had removed it from Twilight, but not yet from Rainbow. :3

I think it looks cooler with the refraction. It gives it a more natural feel.

This looks really good, I like the realism it gives to the model.

Does the refraction reflect the background as well or just the light? Looks awesome anyway! Would definitely download if available.

Just the light. The "background" shown is just a texture it uses to make it feel like it is reflecting.

It defiantly adds more realism to the characters but is it really worth the extravagant amount of effort for you though is the main question.

I have an question is it possible to have an pony model reflection on an model eyes with this feature your working on? Here is an example i102.photobucket.com/albums/m1…

It won't do true reflections. If you want those, you will need to use some kind of post processing.

Hmm. I like it, and I don't think the amount of detail stands out from the rest in a bad way at all. If you can do it without too much trouble, try it out some more and see how you like it. I sure do!

I think it looks good, as it seems to react to light in a more realistic way
(by realistic i mean that the eyes respond to light intensity, becoming darker when it is less bright.)

Is there a way to make a minor reflection of the scene (like you have done), but make the specular a white circle that follows the light.
That way you can keep to the show style, but the design is dynamic.
I think the reflected eyes look less professional because the rest of the body doesn't match the lighting.

I think it depends on what you are making at the time.
A close-up will probably benefit from a more details pass.
But right now both look pretty similar from a distance and you can barely see any tell there is anything different.

Ah, yes, I remember I've been trying to make pony eyes use the EyeRefract shader (mainly for cloaking purposes) earlier, but whatever I did, I couldn't get it to work nor get the scale to look okay-ish. Maybe I should try that again some time.

I think that they need to stay cartoonish. the models are overall very stylized; having a disparately realistic component to them such as eyes this detailed ... really stands out in an unsettling and uncanny way. They don't seem to fit.
However, I believe your exploration into this concept is extremely valuable! Don't scrap it! Just save it for future exploration.
Edit:
...on second thought, the more I watch it, the more I am drawn to it o_o it's really QUITE stunning...
Well, use it or save it, I am appreciative that you'd made it at all!

I like the idea, but I think if your going to do that, then might as well update to whole model to be a little more real (feathers, fur, and much more). Keep in mind that the model is missing key joints in the front legs (arms) and body preventing some of the realistic movements. However, that's up to anybody who wants to take up that challenge. The models do need a major upgrade, it's been a good year.
Also Argodaemon, keep up the good work !

I only do the animating side of stuff (and some playing with textures), so any other changes are beyond me. SFM isn't built to handle fur and such beyond a bumpmap, which would look a bit awkward.

That's why I added anybody up to the challenge lol. I know it's next to impossible, but it will be one hell of a shot though.
You do a great job at animating, so keep it up.

The look sort of breaks down when viewed up close, mainly because the fixed envmap doesn't match up with the surroundings. Plus, it looks more like a super reflective marble than an actual eyeball. There's also the $CorneaTexture, which doesn't appear to be sized up to cover the large iris, causing that weird bump on the pupil.
Apart from the extreme close up, the effect looks rather neat.
As for animating the pupil, one possibility is compiling an animated texture and using $frame (I think?) in the vmt to control it.

argodaemon In reply to ferlaw08 [2015-01-19 18:03:15 +0000 UTC]
I will be fixing the cornea texture. Just wanted to see if it was worth it before putting a bunch more work into it.
The VMT has a float variable for dilation, so such could be added as an override and have an animation set added. The problem is that it appears to always be just a circle. Can't make it an oval like the eyes have.
I have it looking a bit better on close up atm, but am having issues with low-lighting. The eyes appear to have a slight glow. It is a work in progress for a reason.

Darn. The EyeRefract shader is definitely a fiddly one.
But still, it's a work in progress with potential
Good luck with it!

Frankly, I prefer the classical version. The refraction thing kinda makes it look like the eye is made of glass. But hey, just my opinion.

ElwisFromPoland [2015-01-19 08:46:30 +0000 UTC]
Well, depends when you want to use it. Sure, the reflection is good for more serious stuff, and when you want to make things look a bit more dynamic/realistic. The no reflection is good for maybe simple posters, short animations, gifs and such. But it's only my opinion.

Does eye shader allow using cubemaps without harming pupil movement?
That's curious.

I personally love the refraction. It makes the eyes look 'deeper' for lack of a better word, and you do a lot of serious stuff, so refracting eyes may help add a sense of added depth to the moments with the characters looking a bit more like they have souls. Plus it looks really good. Whichever you end up using though is fine by me; as I am not an animator, I can't really make an educated opinion about this kind of stuff.

Haha! I remember mentioning about eye stuff before and now this. Good work!
I'd say maybe you could use this on some close-up shots to add some nice effects, or when you want a more realistic eye reflection in darker scenes. I wouldn't think you'd want to do this in every scene though

argodaemon In reply to Sarxis [2015-01-18 18:27:01 +0000 UTC]
Swapping back and forth would be very awkward, though. The effects could be dropped to almost nil at points, though, with just a very faint shimmer.

wow thats kinda creepy.... but its kinda cool too.
Run it through an animation like youre thinking. Thats really going to be the best bet.
Here its just so large that you get sucked/fall into dashie's eye.
Its like a portal.
Gah I cant remember if its the iris or pupil, think it's pupil. Its just so large!

argodaemon In reply to Papa-Dragon [2015-01-18 18:26:11 +0000 UTC]
Pupil is the black spot that light comes in through. The iris is the area around it that controls its size. Both are huge, which definitely makes things like this hard to do.
