Description Opinion wanted! Do you think that having the SFM ponies with eye refraction like this is better, or not really needed?  It does remove some of the "cartoonish look" the eyes give them now, but I find it kinda neat.

Decided this morning to play around with the eyes of the pony models.  Took a couple hours to figure things out, but have at least some kind of working eye refraction on the ponies.  The problem is it requires modifying the textures and recompiling the model.  There is still a lot of things I want to figure out before I go and recompile any more (like, there "may" be a way to animate the pupil).

Rainbow is using eye refraction, while Twilight is there to show the way they are now.  Had to use Flash as GIFs killed the quality.

As I was only doing testing, Rainbow's left eye was the only one modified, therefore had to close the right.

I like the refraction really adds something to the character, makes it seem more believable as an entity so to speak.

Well, if you would use outlines ( Cellshading, cartoon look)  with strong colors it would not very much fit, but you seem to use mostly realism lightning and shading, so eye refraction would fit very well. (the TF2 character have it active too, i think.)

Nice! Scatic highlight always distracting in 3d-videos, especially in dark ambience.

It just goes to show how hard eyes are, that the more realistic version falls into the uncanny valley a bit. I prefer the cartoony highlights on Twilight.

Eyes are the most important part. They are what we naturally look at and focus on. If the eyes are off, it is the first thing noticed.

It is a very interesting look. I think it's pretty cool! It may not be a thing you use all of the time though.

I think having eye refraction would be better, since SFM is supposed to make things realistic, so why not make the eyes realistic?

sfm is an animation and rendering tool, realism is up to the user.

But most of the things animated using SFM is realistic.

Well the eyes are the windows to the soul, and the refraction gives a huge jump in realism, but it still looks cartoony enough.
It gives the eyes an almost blender quality look.

I like it. It's subtle enough and it looks very much like the 'normal' highlight... I might use a 'toon' shader if it was me, to give it harder edges.

You can create a new pack mane 6 example PN_rainbowdash, next do it on the nahka's pony overhaulafter, the original texture can be create for his pony OC.

O wow, that is a beautiful effect. I think it's wonderful. However, I think that the eyes just aren't right without the cartoon glimmer they always have. They just seem a bit, off. They look nicer with the system that is used now.

I don't really think the reflection is needed. They are pretty cool, but they don't fit with the cartoonish pony like the original.

i think it looks good, however, it wouldn't suit every video. maybe try playing with background, over all lighting and theme?

argodaemon In reply to LordMoonBiscuit [2015-01-18 02:20:37 +0000 UTC]

I agree that it depends on the video. I also found that some lighting setups require a lot of modification, so may not work everytime from a technical standpoint as well.

While it's definitely a cool thign to have, looking at the test, the refraction isn't perfect, as we see at the awkwardness the light makes on the eye at the beginning of the close up.

This is fantastic for a test and looking at this detail for more explorative aspects.

For now, however, I'm content with the cartoon looking eyes, but if this refraction test shows anything, it means that the perfection of it can be there and when it is, I'd definitely use it, or even have it as another skin option.

I think it's worth perusing, although the highlight needs to be less diffused. I'm not familiar with SFM and how lighting works but I could imagine a solution where you have a light in the scene with the specularity cranked and diffuse off, and only have the eyeballs set to pick it up; achieving that huge highlight we know and love. It would be very cool to see this done with coat and mane materials that look less cartoony. Realistic ponies achieved!

Looks neat, but I'd wait till it was fully used in something beyond a test to actually judge it.

Raptor1701 In reply to ??? [2015-01-17 22:52:17 +0000 UTC]

it's not as apparent in the far away shot as the close up (looks more like you just removed the eye shinies). would also be curious how it stands up to various lighting conditions. would it cause problems later, like in dark situations, or bright noon day scenes? also what about the eye line? will not having the shinies as they are still let you get an accurate sense of eye line from various angles? and especially if the eyes aren't fully open (sad, half open, etc)?

Being able to animate the pupil though. they could be useful.

I wonder if a happy medium would having a way to animate the shinies themselves, rather then relying on reflections?

still, this is very nice work.

I did find that there was some modifications that need to be done based on the lighting of the map and scene. Makes them a bit more difficult to use, but still doable.

That looks pretty damn neat, I remember seeing it done before but the shine was overdone, which made it look really bad. Plus that meant that the poor bastard who just wanted to make his OC had to learn that technology as well.

I think you should go for it, at least try a larger scale test where only a few ponies have that shader and see how it looks then

One problem though, the "bump" that should be over the iris is misplaced, you might have to make a custom one for this to work perfectly.

Reminds me of those eye exams where you have to look at a bright light.

Looks awesome. Only thing I like in the original better is that without the reflection of the room it's less distracting. On the counterpoint, that would make for an epic camera shot where you see something or someone reflected in a pony's eye.

I think both are equally good, cause it would add much to a scene with eye refraction needed, or like a wet (crying) eye. And then a normal eye in general is good.

Well it looks cool but also kinda weird. Seems more like a glass eye.
One question though, is it a static refraction or is it based on cubemaps?

It is based on a cubemap.

I think it really comes to personal preferences like someone else has mentioned.  If there's a way to dial down the intensity it may look a bit better imo.  Right now it just seems a bit TOO shiny, given how large the pupils are.

Thats me though, I've gone the completely opposite route and use the flat cartoon styled eyes on everything.

I think i would be good on a poster or maybe a good close up shot, other than that it is a bit distracting.

Mokey1980s [2015-01-17 21:13:33 +0000 UTC]

This would be more of a cosmetic choice really. The eye refraction on Rainbowdash does look pretty cool, yet Twi's regular eye look has it's cartoon charm, which I kinda prefer from a personal standpoint (as I come from a traditional Looney Tunes, Popeye, Disney, Muppets to another extent, etc background).

If you prefer the new look, which I admit is very nice and can work, go for it
