I've been known as The Angst Maven for most of my life due to the fact that I can handle angst that would possibly kill most normal humans.You don't need blood and gore to make something angsty - you can use it, of course - but the angst I like best is situational; the kind where you pause to take a breath and the image that you take in suddenly freezes your heart....
THAT'S the kind of angst I like.
Anyway, I've been obsessing over this single scene that was never shown in the anime or manga and yet we know must have happened. In other fandoms, I've written these kinds of events into fanfics - but with FMA
, and the lovely new wacom tablet I got, I can illustrate them!The neatest thing is, I thought it would be difficult to get the look of the character right, but unlike live humans who have a million planes, angles and shapes that you must get right in order to capture them, all these anime characters have is a couple of lines! And if you didn't get it right the first time, the computer lets you move that line until you do! No smudges, no eraser burnouts and no wearing through the page! How cool is that?

Oh, that's great! I love it when someone 'gets' angst and enjoys it as much as I do.
I always compare it to a rollercoaster ride - you know you no one's really going to get hurt so you can enjoy the vicarious thrill of feeling the fear and concern without consequences. OK, some people still think we're sickos, but while there are people who base jump or ride rollercoasters for the exact same kinds of reasons, how can we be considered whacky? LOL!

Ahaha, exactly! And it's also like that with really good music. I like songs that are I guess "depressing" because it just brings so much emotion into the experience and really allows you to feel it, and it just makes everything seem so much more alive (oh no, I'm starting to ramble xD)

Well... *rubs palms together* As with any art; drawing, writing, whatever, the interpretation is really up to the recipient. You may imagine whatever dire thing you wish (and several have occurred to me).
Though if you are asking what my original intention for this piece was, it was to illustrate the (sadly, never drawn) scene following the events in Baschool where Ed gets a steel I-beam shoved through his middle. He obviously got to a doctor and was healed, but silly ol' me really wanted to see that scene. Since neither the manga nor the anime gave it to me, I drew it myself.
You are more than welcome (and most encouraged) to come up with your own explanation however.

You are most definitely welcome! I tried to make it look like an actual still from the anime, as if there was a scene we didn't get to see. It was most definitely intended to inspire new (and yummy angsty!) new fanfics so I'm really pleased it has done so for you!

awesome work! i like scenes like this myself because you're thinking 'omg what's going to happen? what did happen? will he be ok?' it gives wonderful suspense and so much could go wrong. . . . .

I've seen this scene written, but this is the first time i've seen in drawn! You've done a very good job at making poor Ed's tan skin look pale, and the little bit of blood at the corner of his mouth is a nice touch x)
