What caused the movement of Germans to the Volga region?

There was a cool lady called Catherine the Great of german ancestry that ruled over Russia quite a long time.
To generate more taxes, let the economy rise, bring western experts and populate regions where noone lives,
she called for a big immigration of Germans into her new country. Germans were important persons of society in
Moscow, St. Petersburg and settled all over Ukraine and at the Volga successfully.
It ended with Stalins deportation, only a tiny minority is still around in some parts.

You write here-Deutsche, there-Deutsche, Schlesier, Pommern, etc. in German, but then you write "Germans in Poland" in English... Deutsche in Polen, maybe? ^^

The east never had a huge population and many "wilde" tribes could attack settlements without obeying,
so they needed loyal people from the west and they won the Germans for that mission^^
