Description I decided to practice in drawing by hand a bit.
I am particularly interested in fashion, so I drew some dresses of the early Victorian era (which is one of my favourites).
Then I coloured them in Photoshop according to my notions of the preferred colour schemes for some characters from my ''A True Story''.

1 Sandra - mostly darker saturated colours and a bit of pastels, both of cold palette, representing the deceiving outer coldness of her appearance

2 Estella - warm and bright colours, a lot of light green and yellow but of soft tones, much like an autumn palette

3 Maggie - rather bright colours in odd combinations, too gaudy (but after all, no one would dare to say that she has a good taste)

4 Vicky - bright clear colours, ''the joy of life''

5 Diana - pastels and muted colours, the tranquility and wellbeing

6 Anne - calm colours od both pastel and brighter palette, very nicely balanced

So, what I would like to ask: which one of the six schemes do you like more?
Also, which colours and outfits do you find more appealing?

And do not forget to enlarge the picture for full view!

Thank you . I'm glad that you liked at least some of them.

These outfits indeed are supposed to reflect the colour choices of different characters, although from the same story of mine.
If you scroll down through the comments, you'll be able to see what I wrote about them and their colours schemes .

I see how colours of each row have their own air. I guess it is matching the personalities of your characters?
First row looks more regal and solemn; second - luxurious; third - imaginative and (for lack of a better word) youthful; fourth - bright and festive; fifth - soft and gentle; sixth - calm and relaxed.
I think I like the third one the most, but the others also are beautiful in their own way.

Thank you for your comment .
The colours in each row reflect the tastes of one of my characters. They are from the same story, so I could keep the same fashion style.

The first one belongs to the main heroine's elder sister Sandra. Dark colours mean to me her deep secretive nature, a strong character hidden by calm appearance.

The second scheme reflects favourite colours of Estella, a close friend of the main heroine. She is calm and confident and mostly prefers warm autumn palette: yellow, orange, warm red and grass green. It's funny that you call these colours "luxurious", this very word comes in mind when I think of autumn.

The third palette shows colour choice of Maggie, Estella's sister. She likes bright colours and gaudy outfits. She is quite a funny character with her liking for bizarre colour combinations, so I included the most fanciful ones I could think of. Although honestly the only outfit of hers here what I like is the sixth lilac one.

The fourth row contains some of favourite colours of Vicky, another sister of the main heroine. As a cheerful person, she also likes bright vibrant colours, but I went with the shades and combinations that I like more than in the third row.

In the fifth row there are some favourite colours of Diana, the main heroine's second cousin and close friend. She prefers light pastel colours and calm warm shades, her favourite colours are white, peach and apple green. As she is quiet and kind, this palette suits her quite well.

And the sixth one is for Anne, the main heroine of the story. She has a lot of common with me in the matter of tastes and preferences, so there's no wonder in that this one is my favourite row . She is calm and relaxed indeed, but in different times she can be lively, worried, inspired, secretive, even sad and desperate, actually she comes through all these states during the story. And every time her outfit reflects her mood.

As a whole, I like row 1 and row 5. Can't really choose between them, I like then equally. Bright bold colours and pale powdered colours.

Individually, here are my preferences:
Dress no1 in row 5
Dress no2 in rows 2 + 5
Dress no3 in rows 1 + 6
Dress no4 in rows 1 + 2
Dress no5 in row 5
Dress no6 in all the rows!
Dress no7 in row 1
Dress no8 in rows 1 + 5
Dress no9 in rows 4 + 5

Wow, you've done an amazing job in colouring ALL these outfits! It takes me a loooooong time just colouring 1 outfit!!!

Thank you for your comment . I'm glad that you found something nice for you at this picture.

So you like both bright colours and pastel. In general the same can be said about me too, although it seems nevertheless we have different tastes .

In fact I really coloured only 5 different outfits. Then I copied them many times, changed colour settings (it's easy in Photoshop) and got other colours (it was hard to stop myself from playing with settings further - I like to change and match colours so much).

But what I'm terribly proud of, are the dreses themselves - I drew them completely by myself on the paper (I only used paper doll as base, you can notice her outlined hands). I should say it appeared way more easy to draw folds by hand than digitally (I have not a tablet so naturally I have to draw by mouse and it just doesn't allow to draw smooth lines).

Now I think of using the dresses (the skirts at least) to make better outfits for my pictures...

Yagellonica In reply to Arrelline [2015-06-03 11:42:36 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, you really must get a tablet! I couldn't even dream of drawing with a mouse!!! That would be a nightmare for me!

And yes, since I've been drawing by hand most of my life and only recently gotten my tablet and the digital drawing program, I also find it easier to sketch things by hand on paper. But then I have to scan the copy and import it to my drawing program... And frankly, I'm sometimes lazy and don't want to do that. So, now I've started to make sketches digitally too. It's a slow learning process...

If you can do all that on Photoshop, I think I should get it. My drawing program allows for very little stuff like that (changing colour schemes)... or maybe I just haven't figured them out yet. I think I'm using only about 30% of the abilities of my program...

You do amazing things with Photoshop!

Arrelline In reply to Yagellonica [2015-06-03 12:10:32 +0000 UTC]

What about a tablet, I'm afraid I can't afford to buy it. But still I believe in the course of time I'll learn how to be better with that I already have .

As to Photoshop, I think it is really quite complicated program too, it has a lot of options. I doubt that after over two years dealing with it I found out at least a half of them.
But I'm quite glad with I already found. Especially I like correcting layers (what allow you to change the colour, brightness, saturation, to make a layer lighter/darker, add toning and more other things without editing the layer itself) and layer masks (they allow to hide a part of the layer without removing it). And various filters, textures (although I spent a lot of time to find in Internet, mostly here on dA, those ones I needed), and especially dear to me option of transparencyboth for brush settings and layers...

Well, it sounds almost like panegyric . I remember I already told quite similar about Photoshop last year and you wanted to get it too then. So I don't think you will really decide to get Photoshop after listening to my words ..

Yagellonica In reply to Arrelline [2015-06-03 12:29:06 +0000 UTC]

I've been trying to get along with my drawing program and it is actually quite good... except that there are things I want to do and it can't do those, no matter what I try. So, I've been seriously considering the Photoshop. It might still take me some time before I actually get it since I do like my drawing program. I wish there was some way I could "test-drive" Photoshop before getting it. My laptop has limited ram (memory) and I don't want to overload it with stuff. I'm already experiencing lag when drawing sometimes and it drives me NUTS!

So, Photoshop and me are getting a little closer... But it will still take some time before I get it.

Ohh, these are gorgeous! My personal favourite schemes are 1 and 6. And out of those schemes, I have certain dresses that I find the most interesting too (although I like the chosen schemes in general, regardless of my most favourite choices of the dresses)!

Out of scheme 1: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th! Mostly due to me being really keen towards dark colours and vibrant changes in colours, depending on the dress. Those look like something that I would even agree to wear!

Out of scheme 6: 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th. I really love the concrete flatness of the colours here, and the outfits look great in those colours (in my opinion)!

From other schemes, I found 8th and 9th dress of scheme 2 really beautiful and dress 5 of scheme 3 too.

Arrelline In reply to DeeryDeerth [2015-04-25 19:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you . I'm glad that you found something nice for yourself in this picture.

I remember about your colour preferences - satured bright and deep shades, mostly green and violet. And I've supposed that if you would like to comment, you would say for the first row .

Also you made clever observation that these outfits look the best in the colours of the sixth row.
Let me tell you in secret, that when I drew the five outfits (and there are generally five different models, with some of them repeating), I initially planned them to be in these colours, namely: 1st royal blue and ivory, 3rd moderate emerald green and chestnut brown, 4th lilac, 5th cream with light blue decorations and 6th pale sage green.

It's because I started to draw these dresses as a part of Anne's wardrobe (probably you remember that she is the heroine of my favourite story), something what I imagine her really wearing. E.g. dark blue and ivory outfit is in what she's sitting for her official portrait, green and chestnut is her favourite home gown, sage green is one of her ballgowns, and cream dress with blue ribbons is what she wears during one of the most significant moments of the story....

But you know me, I'm absolutely keen on colours . So when I coloured these five outfits in Photoshop, I decided to change the colours to see how these outfits would look in the colour schemes of other heroines of the story. Thus the six schemes appeared.

The first one belongs to Anne's elder sister Sandra. It more or less meets your preferences: rich and deep satured colours. Dark colours mean to me deep secretive nature, strong character hidden by calm appearance. It's how I imagine her (and that's how I tried to portray her here in emerald green ). Just for you to know, she is positive character in the story .

The second scheme reflects favourite colours of Estella, Anne's friend. She mostly prefers warm autumn palette: yellow, orange and grass green (just like at this picture ). Also I tried to portray her in yellow and blue .

The third palette shows colours choice of Maggie, Estella's sister. She is said to have no artistic taste, and at the same time she likes bright colours. It's evidently not the best mixture . Her outfits are usually bright and gaudy, often quite weird. I tried to portray her here in her peacock dress .

The fourth row contains some of favourite colours of Vicky, another Anne's sister. She also likes bright vibrant colours, but as she definitely has taste, her outfits look much more elegant and lucky in colour choice. I tried to portray her once here in scarlet red , and I like the dress, although there she looks not as merry and lively as usual. However, from time to time she likes to pretend being quiet and meek.

And in the fifth row are some favourite colours of Diana, Anne's second cousin and close friend. She prefers light pastel colours and calm warm shades, her favourite colours are white, peach and apple green. And she is quiet and kind.

P.S. I'm sorry for writing all this, couldn't stop myself . You're not obliged to read if you don't want to...

You are welcome! I really adore your project here.

Hehe, I'm really glad you remember my most favourite choices of colours. You guessed right though, I really like the first row here.

Ahh, so it's really like that! I did think that the outfits are most fitting with the colours of the sixth row. I really like your original plans and choices too. They look really fitting for them, but the other versions are very nice as well! And yes, I remember Anne's story well. Her wardrobe would look quite majestic in that case, that I can say! You've really thought out her fashion choice well, for every possible occasion!

I do know that you absolutely love colours and thinking about their placement. It's quite amazing, and I love how you compiled the rest among your other heroines of your stories!

Ooh, that's the kind of character I like the most! I've seen that image before, and I think I already like Sandra as a character a lot!

Actually, this is a pretty nice compilation of colours too, just not my favour. I've seen those bizarre images before as well though, and I think she has great taste!

Huh, I have to agree here... while your interpretation is spot-on, Maggie has close to no colour sensibility. My own Mother says that yellows and pinks show childish and extremely bad taste in colour choice.
But to be honest, I really love her peacock dress. It's bizarre and the colour choice seems right. I've seen that one before as well!

I see... taste is rather relative though. It's not something that I would wear, but you already know my ultimate favourites in colour choices, haha. It fits Vicky as a royalty, I believe. At least that's something that saves her there. I've seen that image too... and I can agree that the scarlet dress makes her differ from her usual choices in fashion and the like.

Ahh, it's a fine interpretation. I think those colours suit her personality perfectly as well. Her colour scheme is pretty likeable too.

PS: It's alright. I always read whatever pops up in my feedback section of my Message Centre, even if I don't reply. And if I don't reply, it's because the conversation has either stopped moving or I've been too uninspired to write anything meaningful, so I let it float there until I get the energy to reply something reasonable. I'm sorry that I haven't replied to all of those messages you've left me... but since the last term of my last year of basic school is weighing heavily on me, I have to cut some time off of deviantART...

Arrelline In reply to DeeryDeerth [2015-04-26 13:14:08 +0000 UTC]

It's actually the same story . I mean, all the heroines are from the same story, they even all know each other.
Probably I'll say a couple of words about each of them.

Sandra (nee lady Alexandra Catherine Hayle, daughter of earl and countess of Summervill) is side character but quite interesting one. She is the elder of the three sisters. She is well like her mother by face, so the most of people around her used to think that she is as just calm and reasonable (and calculating) as countess Louise. She is really very calm in appearance, and secretive, almost nobody knows her true thoughts and feelings.
These were times when marriages were the subject of parents' arrangement. So her mother found a fiance for her, a young man from noble and wealthy family (by the way at this picture they are portrayed together ). She pretended to approve her mother's choice, and even agreed on betrothal. However, it ended up with her escaping from home and marrying another man. He had much less money and no origin at all (he was son of Jewish jeweller! just fancy how noble people of that time took that! not to mention that Jews were despised and threatened at all times, well like Gypsies) but all that did not matter to Sandra, because he was really good and decent person and they loved each other...
At first her marriage caused a big scandal in society, but later the certain circumstances helped everybody to make up their minds to that...

Estella, contrary, has vague position in high society at the beginning of the story. Her mother lady Cora, daughter of marquess, married Mr Applegrove. Although being a commoner, nevertheless he was quite prosperous and wealthy editor and publisher, the wealth gave him a little of respect in the society, so Cora's parents, firstly displeased, later submitted to their daughter's desire and gave their blessing for her marriage.
But commoner always stays a commoner in the eyes of high society, and daughter of commoner is firstly daughter of commoner and not granddaughter of marquess.
And despite showing difference toward the matter of origin publicly, very deep in her heart Estella dreams of being true noblewoman, what could be only achieved by marrying a nobleman. She makes herself rather ambitious aim - to marry a duke, who is a distant relative of her grandfather's family. But she immediately faces difficulties, as long as she finds out that he is said about to marry another maiden.
She decides to make acquaintance with this young lady to know her opinion on this subject. She realizes that above mentioned maiden is not enthusiastic about the prospect of such marriage (what's good for Estella, she feels sympathy and soon the two girls become true friends).
But also there are bad news: Estella finds out that the duke is really in love with her beautiful friend. And in spite of these feelings stay without answer, it makes Estella's initial task much more difficult. All she can do is to wait  untill he'll forget his first love...

Maggie, or Maggie Applegrove as she is most often mentioned, is Estella's younger sister. She is very bright, loud, cheerful, and as I said before, "has no taste at all!"(frankly speaking, it's what Vicky says about her, but it's true). Although later her wardrobe and colour choice will become more refined thanks to that she'll start to listen to other people' advices...
Her peacock dress , what you like so much, is really not so bad. But the matter is in that she is cold blonde, and bright vivid colours don't suit her well.

It's funny that you use word "royalty" in conection with Vicky. Probably it's due to that there was a queen in England with the same name, I mean queen Victoria. I certainly knew about that too, and I found it curious to give this name to one of heroines, although Vicky (nee lady Victoria Eleanore Hayle, Anne's second elder sister) was no more than a daughter of earl and eventually marchioness (here she is portrayed with her fiance and future husband , I even named him Albert, in honour of queen Victoria's husband).
She is merry and lively, keen on fashion and clothes (she definitely has much more of taste than Maggie), but she's not light-headed or silly as it may look from the first sight. She is just very positive and optimistic.

Diana, Anne's second cousine, is indeed very sweet and kind-hearted person . Her parents died when she was an infant, so she practically grew up in Hayles family, thus she and Anne are close friends.
Although she is open and sincere, nevertheless she has a secret what even Anne doesn't know about...

P.S. You shown some interest and I couldn't resist telling a bit about the characters. As you already know, I like to speak about myself and my stories .

I love this!!!!!!!!!

My favourite theme is the 6th. I just love all of the blues and whites in there, although I also really like the 3, with its bigger variety of colors.

Personally, the outfit I like most would be the one with short sleeves, the ribbon decorating the "V" shaped neckline and the sash, like the dresses in the 5th and 8th column.

My favourite colors of white, various shades of blue, along with silver and sometimes touches of yellow to warm it up. But I also really like pale violet, turquoise and minty green. Basically, I love pastel colors, although I do like saturated electric blue as well. And cold colors are my favourites.

Is that a little too much?

So, do you like pastel colours, don't you? I like pastel too, although I also like some satured and calm colours like warm pink, warm yelow and warm leaf green. And of course blue colour in all its shades is my all-time favourite...

I'm glad that you like the sixth scheme: it has the most of preferred colours of my most favourite OC, the colours which I myself wouldn't mind to wear. There is no white in this row though, in the first outfit it's ivory and in the fifth - cream colour...

Especially eye-cathing is the first dress in row 6. It's got everything I like - a high contrast and a saturated quite dark blue.
