Description
This species of mushrooms in our 7th colony in this system generate only a few fertile seeds each season, together with a vast collection of symbiotic spores that support the seeds in their life cycle. Those seeds that survive nest in the warm blue sands where their parent lives. They grow until they become small winged versions of their parents and then fly off to start their own blue sand island, with the floating support of the symbiotic spores, where the cycle starts again. The sand isn't really sand as we know it on Earth, it's a colony of very small creatures that live in symbiosis with the mushrooms and with their seeds and spores.
The humans respected and cared for this fragile ecosystem when they arrived to this planet. We see in the image one of the caretakers.
As always, this was rendered in Vue.
EDIT: a DD, wow! This was completely unexpected! Many thanks for cosmicbound for featuring it!
EDIT June 3rd 2017: I made some changes to this image. I changed the lighting on the shrooms and added some details to the the water surface. If you want to see the original version, you can find it in the Scraps folder in my gallery. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the changes.

Damn! I remember the old school notebooks that had the covers with these kinds of designs. Good work!

Very nicely done. I like the 'back story' very much.
Definitely a little of Roger Dean in there.

Thanks!
I wasn't consciously thinking about Roger Dean while making this but he's surely a permanent influence, after having had my bedroom walls covered by his artwork throughout all of my teen years.

Beautiful, utopian science-fiction artwork, so vibrant and peaceful. Makes me want to live in a world where alien planets like this are explored so I can go and travel to such a place, too. Wonderful concept, and congratulations on the DD!

Welp.
You do live in a world like that.

You think we'll see the visit of an exoplanet in our lifetimes? They're discovering a real lot of them with Kepler and other missions, but getting there is still a whole different thing. Already the nearest one around Proxima Centauri is lightyears away...

Ha. Maybe.
There's a specific group of people though.
They've traveled beyond what we call our observable universe. Granted, they are NOT the nicest people around. They do some real bad stuff.
But yeah, we've found alot of cool things.

But doing the bad stuff gets them to fantastic worlds?
Fascinating!

Yes.
They're not really...
Known either.
I know about them from Whistleblower sources. That's when I joined a department of GTVLR in an attempt to intimidate them.
You have no idea how many earth like places there are. The animals are beautiful and fascinating. The sun shines down. The rain refreshes the air. It's just gorgeous. Most people up there can travel to the planets for casual vacations. I can't really go up there often, it's a space turbulence thing. It's like getting carsick except in a spaceship. Most pilots get used to it I guess.
There's quite a bit of intelligent life as well.
We struck gold on Greenrind, found a mayan-esc temple, carved tablets. And the species might be alive. We aren't sure yet.

It sounds like you should be careful speaking about this kind of thing on an open, unprotected channel like a DA comment board then. What if NSA and company are onto you already? Or you happen to tell the wrong person? What tells you I'm not a spy and you're exposing your sources and organisation here?

Because I know these things.
I am careful. I know how to handle the situation.
Sure, I should be more careful. But this is one thread out of many on this piece. Chances are nobody's gonna see this. Cracked my tracker chip a year ago.
They're not onto me.

This piece got quite a few faves and publicity, but you're probably right, the internet is quick lived and it'll be off the front pages soon.
They didn't send anyone after you? I'd have thought they hunt down someone who suddenly falls off their radar. You must be really stealthy.

They sent people after me.
Of course they did.
They're after the entirety of GTVLR.
I have help though. I'm not doing it all alone.
And we're safe for one reason.
One of the co-founders works for GTVL as a spacecraft engineer. But he's hiding some of his breakthroughs from the company and presenting them to GTVLR. We're 1 step ahead of them.
It's not me that's stealthy. It's him.
He's gained their trust for 6 long years. Nobody in their right mind would ever think he'd betray.
But you're right.
If it wasn't for him, my life would probably be on the line.
