Description I would like to thank everyone who commented and favorited my images when I had my 8th DD a few days ago. Although I can't reply to everyone, all those comments and favorites are highly appreciated. Thanks again!

The most interesting aspect of having a DD is when people "discover" my gallery, browse it up and down and comment on many images, old and new, and in my profile page. I'm humbled and honored by your kind words.

I haven't had the time or the mood to work on images lately but I did manage to put some old assets together and make this one now. Nothing special, just not to get rusty. Maybe some of you will recognize some of those mountains and that bridge from some other images of mine.

As always, this is a pure 3D scene, no photo-montage of any sort, and it was rendered in my faithful Vue.

Very beautiful work. I must say, you've done a fantastic job with the snow distribution! I haven't done much work with snow because I've been unable to perfect it, and I don't like doing grubby work This is an inspiration though! I think I'll give it another try!

Thanks! I'm glad you found it inspirational. But have in mind that the snow distribution isn't achieved in Vue alone. This is a mix of several techniques:
1) I made the terrain basic shape in GeoControl2, using isolines.
2) Still in GC2, I applied an erosion filter to the terrain.
3) I exported from GC2 two files: the height map and the erosion distribution map.
4) In Vue, I applied the height map to the function of a procedural terrain.
5) In Vue, I made a layered terrain composed of rock and snow and applied the erosion distribution map to the alpha channel, to distribute the snow where erosion was present (I applied a filter to the alpha to make the snow presence a bit stronger).
6) Still in Vue, I added another snow layer to compensate for the parts where erosion was a bit unnaturally absent (this was driven by angle).
7) Finally, I applied a very subtle grass layer to some of the remaining areas not covered by snow, where the rock was flat.

Ahh, that makes sense! I will have to look the program up! The use of an erosion filter is genius! Step 5 & 6 is something I had trouble with too. The snow always seemed faded. I seems like your method clears up any issues perfectly though. Thanks for the info! And keep up the great work!

I'm working on a pretty big scene right now, but I think I may afterwards. If I run into a complication, I will! Thanks for the offer!Β

I sent you a note a little while ago, but this bears repeating: in all the time I followed your other gallery, you always produced some amazing renders. These newer pieces from you are just breathtaking! It's not only the skill behind the images that amazes me, but your innate sense of artistry.

Once again, you give glimpses of worlds unfolding within worlds. Can't wait to see more from you in the future! : )

can u direct me as to how i can learn to recreate this render?

ArthurBlue In reply to fractal2cry [2013-10-20 14:42:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, one way is to practice for 7 years... That's for how long I've been using Vue. You shouldn't expect to learn this overnight, it takes time.
The main elements are these:
- Mountains were done with GeoControl2 (GeoControl site: www.geocontrol2.com/e_index.ht… ). I used isolines to draw the mountain general shape and then I applied several erosion filters (the main one was thin flows sediment).
- From GC2, I exported the terrain as a height map and the erosion distribution selector as a bitmap.
- Once in Vue, I applied the height map to a procedural terrain, in the terrain editor, and used the distribution map from GC in the material editor to distribute the rock and snow.
- The structures are made with some Vue primitives (torus and cilinders). Really simple. The materials are also native Vue materials, adapted by me for the size and environment.
- The shadows on the ground are made with the clouds (which are some Vue default clouds, adapted by me to create these gaps).

Hope that helped.
