Description Here we go! :3 A tutorial of how I do my lineless stuff! Hopefully it's not.. confusing or anything. I tried. XD;;; *fail*

Mmmn.. I'm also hoping that this loads decently fast. |D;

You can see the larger version of the finished here: artsywolven.deviantart.com/art…

Enjoy..? XDDD; *faceplant*

UPDATE:  7/25/2014 - good lord this is OOOLD.  Perhaps someday I can update it with a more recent tutorial, as this is incredibly outdated and I've since learned a lot of new shortcuts and easier methods.  One of which is called a CLIPPING MASK in Photoshop, which I encourage you all to use like crazy (because it's fantastic and a HUUUGE time saver - if you want to access it, right click one of the layers and simply select clipping mask.  It instantly only colors what the layer beneath it has colored.  For example, after throwing down a base layer of color, make a new layer above it and select clipping mask to only color what is colored in the base color layer.  Give it a try!).

this is one of the absolute best lineless tutorials i've seen!! really, all the steps are easy to follow and i appreciate that u give tips, not many artists do that when they're making a tutorial^^
i love how u show the process of shading and u can really see the image emerge from 2D to 3D! amazingly well done!

Hey artsy, i was just trying this technique and i have a problem... it would be awesome if you could help ^_^
Well, i did the shading just like here, no problem, but now that i'm trying to add the colors, i just can't do it... i have the shading in one layer, and i'm doing the colors in another one, but having the color layer in multiply (or the shading) just makes all light colors go too dark... coloring in the shading layer just would destroy the shading :/
I really don't know what to do XD

I've always fancied lineless art, but whenever I tried it looked just plain bad. I'm gonna try again now that I read this ;D *runs off to sit on her ass staring at a screen for several more hours*

Awesome, I'm so trying this out tonight. Transparency lock, huh? Now THAT is useful! I always wondered how to do that- I tend to like changing my colors around in the middle of coloring, and have no idea how. THANK YOU

Haha, I always get a lot of people who ask about that one! < 3 I'm the same way - always switching colors halfway through. < 333 Transparency lock is definitly a handy tool to have, < 3

This is an awesome Tutorial but I have one question, how on earth do you shade? I like your style of shading, maybe perhaps you can make a tutorial on shading one day, or perhaps you got this method from someone else? Either way I would love to the learn how you do it. Anywho just thought I would ask^__^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsywolven In reply to SaddlePatch [2008-11-06 16:57:49 +0000 UTC]

Ohboy how do I shade. |DDD; Ahaha. Mmn.. for this.. I'll take the original color and grab usually one lighter and four or so darker shades. < 3 I'll go one at a time and add on. :3 Sometimes I start from the darkest shade I have and work to the lightest, but here I think I took the original color and used the next darkest shade to figure out where all the shadows went. o-o But typically I'll always use like.. a size 6 soft brush on opacity levels between 70 to 80 for shading. < 333 Makes things easier to mix. xD;

I dunno. |D We'll see. < 333 Not sure how to explain how on earth I shade? < 333; Well. In a way that isn't so.. confusing. :3 Maybe, though! < 3

what resolution do you work at.. like oigional size or do you draw it larger then resize for the final image???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsywolven In reply to sealle [2008-11-05 03:29:34 +0000 UTC]

I tend to work on whatever the default resolution is? < 3; Usually I'll just automatically make it 1500px by 1500px in case things need to be resized or messed around with and all that. |D *lazy* Usually the size I draw it at is the size it ends up being, though. < 3 Unless it's a tag. :3 Sometimes I'll size things up or down depending, but most of the time it stays the same size or around. < 333

KeechakVarg [2008-11-03 16:02:55 +0000 UTC]

interesting I've never used the lock layer tools what exactly do they do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsywolven In reply to KeechakVarg [2008-11-03 19:11:20 +0000 UTC]

Mmn.. I only use the transparency lock feature. |D The rest.. to be quite honest I have no idea what they're there for. Transparency lock locks the pixels that're on that particular layer so that only they can be colored. < 3 So.. say like in the example.. if you want to change lineart colors or something from what you originally used..? So long as it's on it's own separate layer, you can lock the transparency and only the pixels on the lineart can be modified. Of course the same can be said for a color layer and so on. < 3

Probably makes no sense. |D; It's one of those things that's just easier to play around with. < 333

Yep, I kinda teach myself and my photoshop is a lesser version that came with my tablet so it isn't as complex as the CS programs... though it just confusing me how they work and all.
