As I understand it, Discord used to rule and was overthrown by them rather than invaded. Or did he invade? I haven't seen any of S4 yet so I could be wrong. Even then, canon is powerless against this much D'awwwww. <3

It's stated that he did in Return of Harmony part 1 (Celestia: "Before my sister and I stood up to him, he ruled Equestria in an eternal state of unrest and unhappiness.")
He may have ruled through force, and the ponies may not have been happy about it, but he still ruled.

At this point we still only know that he ruled at some point in the past. I've always assumed that he hadn't ruled since the beginning of history though, but had appeared at some point. I tend to imagine that Hearth's Warming Eve is pre-Discord, given that the princesses aren't there.

I like it how in a lot of your pictures, the age gap between those to fluctuates.

I always try to use what I think works best for each picture, rather than sticking to a consistent headcanon. For instance, in 'shenanigans' pictures like this one they really need to be on equal ground rather than having one be responsible for the other, so I put them at approximately the same age.

Actually, maybe he did. Maybe that's why his reign lasted so long. Took a while for ponies to convince Tia and Lulu that their "Uncle Dissy" was a bad guy, since he gave them such delicious weather and just wanted to make things easier for them.

That would actually be pretty interesting to read.
...actually, what if the reason Discord was able to take over so easily back then was also because Tia and Luna's parents had passed on when they were young, resulting in their early ascension to the throne? Then, when they're still bowed down with grief and the weight of responsibility, Discord shows up and conjures impossible things that bring smiles to their faces again. He offers to take care of them, help them smile and overcome their sorrow and grief, and all he asks in return is the duties and headaches of the throne, which the fillies don't want in the first place...
...good god. Discord sounds like a cross between Loki and the Cat in the Hat.

oooh! i have an idea what if the two of them were only fillies because they weren't ready (because parents were still alive) and because they didn't want to be leaders? what if it was only by acknowledging that they had to grow up and face their problems that they were able to grow up, find the tree of harmony, and defeat discord? Gah i have a new headcannon and it is amazing!!!!
