Description
So, years ago, a friend of mine was getting married. She and I grew up with each other, but kind of drifted apart after high school, so I haven't had as much contact with her. During the process, I met a friend of hers who made these beautiful trees from wire with stone chips for leaves. A couple weeks ago, I got inspired and decided to try one of my own. Here it is, my first attempt. It stands about six inches high and is attached to a glass mirror about six inches across. It's primarily created with genuine tiger's eye stone chips, but there are a few larger stones around the base. Tiger's eye is probably one of my favorite semi-precious stones, even though brown isn't necessarily a favorite color. I love the shimmer across the stone, the way the lines move and the colors shift. Enchanting rocks, in my opinion. Most are brown tiger's eye, but there are some greens and reds mixed in.
I'm happy with it. I'll probably make more of these, too. I've got stones to make an amethyst tree next, and a few other stones I'd like to try, just haven't bought the stuff.
Is this something anyone would have any interest in purchasing? Not that I'm taking commissions at the moment, but if I started to make more and market them, is that something anyone here would be interested in? If so, what's the max price you'd consider paying for something like this? What kind of stones would you want to see, and what color of wire to make the tree trunk and branches? (Colors can be seen by viewing metal strands used in jewelry making.) Just curious if this is something people might be interested in or if I'm just a weirdo. Hope you enjoy viewing, regardless. I've never looked to see if anyone else makes something like this . . . It's kind of fun, but tedious and slow-paced.
I will have more pictures on my web site in a week or two, under the tab "Other Projects." www.aryenne.com

I've always wanted to make a tree like that, but they look so hard to make

Same here, and for some reason, I got an idea of how to pursue. It wasn't really hard, but definitely tedious. I used jewelry wire of several different gauges. I used a thick gauge, 16 I think, and cut it into seven pieces, which I twisted together for the trunk. Then I used another, an 18 gauge I think, to add additional branches and create the general shape. I then put a stone gem on a piece of 24 or so gauge wire, twisted it together, then twisted it around the branches. Stuck my fingers plenty of times, and it definitely took some time to complete, but pretty easy overall. If you ever want to give it a try, feel free to email me questions (I'll respond faster that way than messaging through DA).

This is a beautiful tree! How did you make it? I'd love to try to make them, too... wouldn't be able to afford to buy one from you, but it's gorgeous and I'm sure someone will.

It's actually easier than I expected. I bought jewelry wire in three different sizes, an 18 (or 16) gauge, 24, and 28. I use the big wire to twist together to form a trunk and main branches, wrap the 24 gauge wire around it to help give places to hold and I use the 28 for the stones. I take a stone chip and put it on a piece of wire, twist the ends to give it a single edge anywhere from 2 to 4 inches, then I start wrapping around the branches until it looks right. It's tedious and time-consuming, but it's also quiet enjoyable.

Thanks! I'll have to bring it to show to you next time you're here. It's much prettier in person.

Thank you! I'm working on an amethyst one now that's bigger. The amethyst has over 500 hundred stones. This one, I haven't counted, it probably under 200.

I'll have to measure it, but I'm guessing about 9 inches tall. (I have no idea how tall that is in centimeters; sorry.) The top became heavy enough that I had to modify the trunk to make it strong enough! I need to finish it . . .
Most of my spare time has been trying to clean and organize in preparation of the arrival of new furniture.

Thanks! I definitely will. I've got stuff to start a tree with amethyst next, but that's one I'll probably see about selling or auctioning.

Thanks! The pictures don't really do it justice, in my opinion.
