It is from a Japanese animated film called "Hadashi no Gen" or "Barefoot Gen" which focuses on what happened to a certain family on the day of the Hiroshima bombing.

I do. A fine testament of how governments serve only themselves, not us civilians & an eternal reminder of war madness.

I wonder what would have happened if Japan surrendered when they could have. Most of those people would be alive. I would not have be scared shitless by the movie and most likely be asleep right now. And Gen's sister would be alive.

Sad reality. Hiroshima was #43 on the list of Japanise cities destroyed in WW2. The 42 cities before it had been burned to ashes via an only slightly less terrifying weapon: White Phosphorus.

Or even better. If Hittler never took power! Then WWII would not have been, the nuclear bomb would not be made. My great great grandfather would not be a frozen block of ice on the Russian front and Pearl Harbor would still be what it was.

Hitler was a modern artist but couldn't get into to art school, so he turned into a monster and did those horrible things.

Somebody should go back in time and help Hitler get into Art school. See what it does to the timeline.

I just saw it last weekend & it was so sad! I mean I LUVE Japan & they literally bombed Hiroshima & Nagasaki &, honest to God, the people were total dicks to do that! Innocent people died during the bomb! Thats not the worst part; Gen's dad, older sister & little brother were killed & then while Gen & this kid who looks like Shinji finally get milk for Tomoko, she's all ready dead! When I saw that, I was SO shocked that I dropped my jaw! >(

The Japanese did equally bad they massacred and killed many with their empire. Also the point of the movie was not an anti American point it was about how during war ALL goverments don't care about their citizens and soldiers, but winning.

(Yes, I know I'm late to the party) I got a link to this while browsing for horror, and I got more than I expected. I've seen a lot of scary, messed up things in my time, but this had a real affect on me. Knowing it's based of the author's own experience made it all the more heavy. To be honest, I only watched several scenes, I couldn't stomach the whole thing. I had to take a break after the fire scene, just to hug my own little brother. I love my brother and mom deeply and I kept thinking of how it would feel to lose them. It was an incredibly powerful piece of work. You've done a nice portrayal of it as well. Nicely done.

I just saw this film today. Seeing it reminded me of a documentary film I saw a couple years back called "White Light/Black Rain." It had several interviews with survivors and some of the Americans who were involved in the bombings. Seeing Barefoot Gen reminded me of all the accounts I had heard in that film. Needless to say both films made me cry.

The scene you have drawn here was the hardest part to watch.

Ya, i never knew about this film until I watched a documentary showing people currently living in Hiroshima and are being interviewed about what happened on August 6th of 1945..sadly MOST answered, "I have no idea.." !! Then they interviewed the creator of Hadashi no Gen, showing clips of the film and I thought, "Gotta watch this!!" It also made me cry so much...

Nice drawing . I've watched this movie and its one of my favorite Anime movies and I also watched the Live Action version (partially). It can be really depressing. It really gets you thinking about war...... at the time then and just in general. It shows, how cruel human beings can be.
