Description
"They grow up loyal to the Republic, or they don't grow up at all."
- Alpha-17, on the young clones on Kamino
For Early Independence Day, I drew Captain Rex's Expanded Universe's counterpart from the Republic comics by Dark Horse, Alpha-17 (in both his Phase I and Phase II armor), with 2003 Clone Wars art style by Genndy Tartakovsky, along with my headcanon of what happened to him for the "Journal of the Whills" continuity, mixed with Legends and Canon elements.
I hope you guys like it!

Description (Updated):
Alpha-17 was an Alpha-class Advanced Recon Commando (ARC) trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Alpha was among the first true generation of clone troopers to be birthed from Jango Fett's DNA prior to the Clone Wars. Specially trained by the many Mandalorian Cuy'val Dar trainers on Kamino and even his original template Jango Fett himself, he and his fellow ARC troopers had less genetic tampering and acted more independently than the regular clones. Upon reaching maturity, Alpha signed up as a head instructor of the Tipoca City training facility, alongside fellow ARC troopers Captain Fordo and Commander Colt. Captain Rex of the 501st Legion, Commander Cody of the 212th Attack Battalion, Commanders Ponds and Neyo of the 91st Reconnaissance Corps, Commander Bacara of the 21st Nova Corps, Commander Gree of the 41st Elite Corps, Commander Bly of the 327th Star Corps, Commander Fox of the Coruscant Guard, Commander Wolffe of the 104th Battalion, Commander Davijaan (callsign Oddball) of Clone Flight Squad Seven, Captain Jag of the 127th Gunship Wing, Commander Etan of the 187th Legion, and many more were among the first hundred to be enrolled in and graduate from his experimental training regimen, known as the ARC training program.
After the outbreak of the Clone Wars in the First Battle of Geonosis, Alpha-17 and a large majority of ARC troopers were stationed on Kamino in order to train the second generation of clone troopers who haven't yet completed their training. Alpha-17, as was the case with the rest of the ARCs, would first see action with the Separatist invasion of Kamino in the late months of the Clone Wars' first year. As the droid forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems pushed towards the heart of Tipoca City, the Kaminoan Prime Minister, Lama Su, authorized the ARC troopers' deployment to hot-spots across Kamino in a last-ditch effort to save the planet's precious cloning facilities. During the fighting to push the droids from Tipoca's central armory, Alpha-17 teamed up with Jedi Master Shaak Ti, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Kenobi's Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. During the First Battle of Kamino, Alpha-17 took a liking to Kenobi and Skywalker. When the city's clone stocks became compromised, Alpha-17 rigged the lab to self-destruct, much to the dismay of the Jedi. Shaak Ti wished there was another way, so Alpha-17 made a strategy for Obi-Wan and Anakin to collapse the transparisteel walls linking the facility while Ti held back the ocean before they sealed the place off. When the plan worked and the attack was successfully repelled, Alpha-17 then aborted the detonation sequence.
Later on, Alpha-17 would accompany Kenobi and Skywalker, along with Jedi Master Glaive and his Padawan Zule Xiss, on a mission to one of Naboo's moons, Ohma-D'un, to investigate the actions of a new Separatist bio-weapon tested on the Gungan colony on the moon. On Ohma-D'un, they fell under attack from the Gen'Dai bounty hunter Durge and the Rattataki Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress. Under Obi-Wan's orders, Alpha-17 went with Anakin to find and destroy the bio-weapon responsible for the Gungan colony's destruction before it could be let loose in Theed. It was then that Anakin, uncomfortable with calling the ARC trooper simply "clone", named him "Alpha".
Following the Mission to Ohma-D'un, Alpha was once again chosen by Kenobi and Skywalker to accompany them on another important mission. This time, the three were to led the assault during the infamous Battle of Jabiim, which would be the Galactic Republic's most worst defeat in the entire Clone Wars. In the initial days of the assault, the Republic saw victory until the rain continued to pour and their assault vehicles became bogged down in the mud and became an easy target for the Separatist-allied Jabiimi guerrillas. The Republic was dealt its greatest blow during the battle with the apparent death of Obi-Wan and Alpha while they were clearing out a downed AT-AT.
However, neither Obi-Wan nor Alpha died in the explosion as they actually fell in Separatist custody and were transferred to Ventress' secret prison on her homeworld of Rattatak. Once there, Ventress tried to beat and torture the two of them into revealing sensitive information regarding Republic troop movements, but to no avail. Before she got the information she wanted, however, the two of them escaped under the guise of a prison help. With the help of Anakin and Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi, they were able to escape Ventress' grasp and make their way back to the Grand Army of the Republic.
Following the ordeal, Alpha was transferred out of General Kenobi's Third Systems Army and returned to Kamino as an instructor to train current and future generations of clone commanders at Tipoca City. He followed Anakin's previous suggestion that he give them names. While Alpha would sit in the sidelines for most of the Clone Wars' second and third years, he would again see some action in the Second Battle of Kamino, when the CIS forces, now led by General Grievous and Asajj Ventress, attempted to destroy the cloning facilities. Alpha and the other ARC troopers would push back the Separatists with the help of Shaak Ti, Obi-Wan Kenobi (now Jedi Master and a member of the Jedi High Council), Anakin Skywalker (who was recently appointed the position of Jedi Knight sometime after Jabiim), and even two of his former trainees, Captain Rex and Commander Cody. In the battle's aftermath, Alpha witnessed the five members of Domino Squad who fought valiantly in the battle (Echo, Fives, Hevy, Cutup, and Droidbait) to be promoted ARC troopers serving in the 501st Legion for their valiant service in the campaign. Into the later stages of the war, few of the newly-graduated commanders were hand-picked by Alpha and assigned to a specialized team of elite clones called Squad Seven, with Captain Rex, Commander Cody, and Commander Oddball as its leaders.
Squad Seven, led by Alpha, would see action throughout the final two years of the Clone Wars in the aftermath of Operation Durge's Lance, when the Republic was still recovering after Separatist droid forces led by General Grievous ravaged the Core Worlds. Alpha, Rex, Cody, and Oddball would assist Obi-Wan, Anakin, Admiral Wulif Yularen, and Anakin's former Padawan and Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano in the Battle of Bonadan. Alpha, Obi-Wan, Cody, and Ahsoka led the 212th Attack Battalion and the Third Systems Army in a ground assault against the Separatist occupation, while Anakin and Oddball led Republic starfighter squadrons took care of the enemy fleet in Bonadan's orbit. The Republic was successful in liberating Bonadan's capital city and decimating the CIS fleet, however, they would be suddenly overwhelmed by Separatist reinforcements backed by General Grievous himself. Thankfully, they would be rescued at the last minute by Torrent Company led by Anakin and Rex before retreating, but the Battle of Bonadan was left as another defeat for the Republic.
Alpha-17 and Squad Seven were called back into action once again by General Kenobi after Bonadan on a mission to the Mandalorian colony of Ordo to help destroy a Separatist weapons factory oversaw by the CIS-allied Mandalorian Protectors led by clone trooper defector Spar, also known as Mandalore the Resurrector. Commander Cody and a small squad of 212th Battalion troopers, along with Boil, Crys, Trapper, Wooley, Gearshift, and Longshot, were to infiltrate the factory easily. There, the clones discovered that the Mandalorian Protectors were constructing mech suits based off of war droids from the Old Republic for the Separatist cause. Cody and his men were then completely overwhelmed and outgunned by several battle droids, Mandalorians, and mech suits, but they would be aided by reinforcements in the form of Kenobi and Alpha, accompanied by the Muunilinst 10 by Captain Fordo. Squad Seven and the Muunilinst 10 were able to take control of the factory and destroy the mech suit prototypes, but Spar and his surviving lieutenants were able to escape.
Alpha was later chosen to accompany Senator Bail Organa on his tour of the Outer Rim Sieges aboard the Star Destroyer Intervention. When the Intervention was commandeered by General Kenobi in order to lead the Battle of Boz Pity, Alpha readied himself for yet another battle. During the fighting, Alpha was critically wounded by General Grievous himself, so much so that it was thought he'd never walk again. As hostilities wound down, Alpha was sent to a medical facility on Coruscant, where he would recover for the remainder of the Outer Rim Sieges.
An recovered Alpha-17 would fight to defend the capital of the Galactic Republic alongside Fordo and the Muunilinst 10 during the Battle of Coruscant. After the battle, he and Fordo were ordered to execute Order 66. Unable to believe that the Jedi Order would ever betray the Republic, the two Clone officers and the rest of Muunilinst 10 sought to warn the Jedi at the Jedi Temple of the orders to destroy them, but it was too late as Alpha's former General Anakin Skywalker (now Darth Vader) and the 501st Legion led by Lieutenant Appo ransacked the Jedi Temple in what would be known as Operation Knightfall. Not only that, Alpha, Fordo, and their loyal troopers were attacked by some of their fellow ARC troopers, who actually complied with Order 66. Now branded as deserters and traitors of the new Galactic Empire, Alpha and Muunilinst 10, along with several other rogue clone troopers, were given refuge by Kal Skirata on Mandalore.
After the Clone Wars, Alpha-17 led joint operations of rogue clone troopers and Bo-Katan Kryze's Nite Owls in retaking Mandalore from the Empire and Gar Saxon's regime until they were able to regain control of the planet in 3 ABY with the help of the united Mandalorian Clans led by Sabine Wren and members of the Rebel Alliance, especially Anakin's twin children Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.
In the later stages of the Galactic Civil War, Alpha-17 would stay on Mandalore as an combat instructor to train future Mandalorian warriors.
