"I was rather fond of Commander Appo"

- Darth Vader, on Appo's death

Hi, everybody! Dakaueze here, and today here's the commanding officer of the 501st Legion of the Grand Army of the Republic! No...not Captain Rex (though we may see him another day), but his successor Commander Appo (in both Phase I and Phase II armor) drawn in 2003 Clone Wars art style by Genndy Tartakovsky. The information in the bio of my headcanon of Appo exists within the "Journal of the Whills" continuity, which blends elements from both Canon and Legends into one universe.

Description (Updated):
CS-1119 was cloned from the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett on the planet Kamino, part of the Grand Army of the Republic that would serve in the Clone Wars. Trained on Tipoca City as a special operations trooper, CS-1119, who bestowed himself the name "Appo", began his career as a soldier for the Galactic Republic as a sergeant of the 501st Legion led by CT-7567, also known as Captain Rex. A devout follower of the rules and regs, Appo was constantly ready to relay or obey his superiors' commands, and sometimes even took the initiative to seek out some piece of information before his superior asked for it. Like all first-generation members of the 501st, Appo fought in the frontlines during the First Battle of Geonosis, which ended the 2-year-long Separatist Crisis and began the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS).

After Geonosis, Appo was assigned to become one of the earliest members of the 501st's elite Torrent Company led by Rex himself as the clone legion fought on various fronts during the war throughout the Skyriver Galaxy. Appo participated in the Battle of Arantara, the same battle where the 501st Legion first met their Jedi Commander for most of the Clone Wars-a young Jedi Padawan named Anakin Skywalker. He immediately showed loyalty to Skywalker and was often quick to defend him from those who criticized him. He also formed a close friendship with two of Rex's lieutenants Bow and Vill, who he'd known since their days as clone cadets back on Kamino. As the Clone Wars progressed, Appo was quickly accepted into the inner circle of the 501st; which was comprised of Anakin Skywalker (who would become a Jedi Knight late in the war's second year), Skywalker's future Jedi apprentice Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex, Major Bow, Lieutenant Vill, Lieutenant Trap, Lieutenant Vaughn, Sergeant Denal, Sergeant Kano, Sergeant Boomer, Sergeant Fox, Sergeant Coric, and Admiral Wulif Yularen.

Appo would serve in numerous battles with the 501st Legion from the Battle of Christophsis to the Second Battle of Geonosis to the Battle of Coruscant. During the Second Battle of Geonosis, Appo participated in the invasion of Landing Point Rain, along with the 212th Attack Battalion and the 21st Nova Corps, but like his Jedi leaders and fellow clones, he would trek to the landing zone on foot after the gunship that he was in was shot down. He would later participate in the assault on the main Geonosian droid factory, fighting the battle droids as they were coming out of the factory, fresh off the assembly line. After blasting down the droids, Appo was standing in formation as he spotted new Separatists tanks exiting the factory. Appo would be forced to fall back as the tanks managed to withstand an artillery barrage, and then destroyed their own artillery units and AT-TE walkers, forcing him and the rest of the clones to retreat. Fortunately for Sergeant Appo and his clone brothers, the tanks would be destroyed, and the droid factory would be destroyed, thanks to the efforts of Padawan duo Ahsoka Tano and Barriss Offee.

Later in the third year of the Clone Wars, Appo was part of the Republic battle group made up of members of the 501st and the 212th that was dispatched to the CIS-allied planet of Umbara. In the Battle of Umbara, Appo, along with the other members of Torrent Company, met Besalisk Jedi Master Pong Krell. While grew to despise the four-armed Jedi, Appo, a stickler of the rules, continued to follow his orders, regardless of the outcomes. He quickly became of a fast favorite of Krell, along with Vill and a clone trooper named Dogma. Throughout the battle, he firsthand saw Krell's willingness to throw away the lives of his troops.

After the Republic battle group learned of a Confederate supply ship in orbit over Umbara, Fives wanted to use the Umbaran starfighters to board the ship and destroy it. Krell, however, ordered the clones to disregard any use of the starfighters, but Fives, with troopers Jesse and Hardcase and ARC troopers Hevy and Cutup, disobeyed the order. After Hardcase sacrificed himself by staying behind to destroy the supply ship, Fives, Jesse, Hevy, and Cutup returned to the Republic-occupied airbase on Umbara. After learning of the clones' actions, Krell told Appo to bring the four to him in the airbase's central command tower. Appo relayed the order to Fives, Jesse, Hevy, and Cutup and the clones met with Krell in the tower. Krell informed the four clones that because they disobeyed a direct order, they would be imprisoned for their actions and be sent to the Grand Army's court-martial.

Though they were imprisoned and were ready to be sent to the court-martial, Krell changed his mind, due to the court-martial's lengthy trail time. Instead, Krell decided to execute Fives, Jesse, Hevy, and Cutup for their crimes. Rex, with Appo, was ordered to take the four clones outside so they could be executed by a firing squad. As Appo stood by the handcuffed clones, the firing squad prepared to shoot the four clones, although their concentration was cut off after Fives pleaded for them to rethink. Dogma, however, did not care for Fives' words and ordered the firing squad to fire on Fives, Jesse, Hevy, and Cutup. Fives' words affected them, however, which caused them to misfire. Rex ordered Appo and another clone to take off their binders. However, on Krell's orders, the four clones were taken back to the airbase's prison, while Rex's men regrouped to mobilize. When Krell sent the troops to attack Umbarans believed to have stolen clone armor, Appo was among many that were shocked to learn that they had attacked their own actual brothers from the 212th Attack Battalion. After it was learned that Krell was responsible for what happened, Appo was one of the many clones that Rex gathered up capture the fallen Jedi to ensure the protection of the Republic.

After the Battle of Umbara, Appo was promoted to be a clone commander, but Rex-despite only being a captain-held more authority, retaining his position as leader of the 501st as a whole. In 19 BBY, during the waning days of the Clone Wars, the Republic was confronted with a simultaneous Separatist attack on Coruscant and a crisis on Mandalore. General Skywalker made the decision to divide the 501st to respond to both threats, promoting Captain Rex to serve as the commander of a division along with Ahsoka, the 332nd Division. Appo remained in the previous force of the 501st, returning with that part of the legion to Coruscant and being made its commander.

Shortly after the Republic victory on Coruscant, Commander Appo oversaw many detachments of the 501st being sent across the galaxy to aid the Republic's efforts in the Outer Rim Sieges, fighting on Mygeeto, Felucia, Kashyyyk, and Utapau. In that same time, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine declared the Jedi Order enemies of the Republic and issued Order 66. After receiving Order 66, Appo led the 501st Legion against the Jedi Temple, serving alongside the Chancellor's new apprentice Darth Vader, formerly Anakin Skywalker, in Operation Knightfall. During that night, Appo and his soldiers slaughtered numerous Jedi Masters, Knights, Padawans, and even Younglings on that night. Years of psychological conditioning, their genetic disposition, and changes in their personalities and behavior brought by their inhibitor chips kept many of the members of the 501st, including Appo, from not following their orders. Though Appo didn't morally agree to kill the Jedi Generals he once looked up to, he and his brothers continued to be "good soldiers" followed orders nonetheless. When Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan came to the Jedi Temple to investigate, but Appo, Sergeant Fox, and a squad of clones forced him to leave. As Organa turned to go, Jedi Padawan Zett Jukassa came out of nowhere and began slashing at some of the clone troopers, including Appo, with his lightsaber. Fox killed Jukassa, but allowed Bail Organa to escape. Zett Jukassa's attack seriously wounded Appo, but he survived and later recovered.

When the Republic was transformed into the First Galactic Empire on Empire Day by Chancellor Palpatine, now Emperor Palpatine, Appo was swiftly promoted to the position of overall commander of the 501st Legion, with Commanders Bow and Vill as his lieutenants, after his recovery due to Captain Rex's "death" at the Siege of Mandalore. Appo and the imperialist members of the 501st were among the first generation of Imperial Stormtroopers, and alongside Vader, they worked to suppress threats against the Empire, immediately earning the moniker "Vader's Fist".

Approximately a month after Empire Day, Vader received word from spies that his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, was on Kessel; against the orders of Emperor Palpatine, he set off for that world. Unbeknownst to Vader, Palpatine dispatched Appo and Bow to follow. This was fortunate for Vader-the intelligence about Kenobi had been bait for a trap laid by Jedi Master Shadday Potkin, and a group of Jedi consisting of Koffi Arana, Tsui Choi, Roblio Darté, Jastus Farr, Ma'kis'shallas, Bultar Swan, and Sia-Lan Wezz waited on Kessel to kill him. Though Vader was able to slay Wezz, Ma'kis, Potkin, Bultar, and Koffi, the last three Jedi survivors-Choi, Darté, and Farr-combined their powers against Vader. Before they could kill him, Appo and Bow arrived and opened fire on the Jedi. After the clones executed the last of them, Appo informed Vader that Palpatine sought his presence.

It was during this time that Appo accompanied Vader aboard his Imperator-class Star Destroyer Exactor to New Plympto, where the Empire had been engaging in operations against Separatist holdouts. Working with Commander Vill, Appo oversaw the removal of forces from the world. Shortly thereafter, Palpatine ordered the Exactor to Murkhana, following reports of surviving Jedi on that world. A squad of clone commandos had refused to obey Order 66 and allowed their Jedi Generals to escape, and Appo and his stormtroopers accompanied Vader down to the planet's surface to deal with the situation.

Commander Salvo, the leader of the Imperial forces on the world, greeted Vader upon his arrival in front of a crowd of Separatist prisoners, then presented him with the bodies and lightsabers of three Jedi who the clones had killed. Vader passed the lightsabers onto Appo, then queried Salvo as to the location of the other three Jedi that had been assigned to Murkhana. Salvo informed him that they had escaped and brought forth the commando squad that had been responsible for letting them live, Ion Team. When Vader drew his own lightsaber and prepared to execute them, Ion Team opened fire; Vader killed two of the clones, and the other two fled into the forest. The Dark Lord ordered Appo to pursue and bring them back alive. It was not long before the traitorous clones were apprehended; upon the return of Appo's men, Vader had Salvo load the Separatist prisoners onto a transport for transfer to an Imperial prison. While processing them, Appo noticed a discrepancy in the prisoner count and realized that two Jedi had escaped after disguising themselves as Separatists and hiding within the group. Vader decided to deal with the problem himself.

Appo was unable to find any sign of the two Jedi, Roan Shryne and Olee Starstone, but he did locate Cash Garrulan, a Twi'lek crime lord with former ties to Shryne. Vader, Appo, and his troopers stormed Garrulan's offices, and Vader was able to catch the escaping crime lord. Garrulan attempted to play dumb, but eventually admitted that Shryne had contacted him; however, he stated that he had refused to help and had turned Shryne's name over to the local garrison. Appo verified his claim. Garrulan then suggested Vader look for a Koorivar named Bioto, who he implied might smuggle out the Jedi in his ship, the Dead Ringer. Appo reported that the Ringer had taken flight, and Vader ordered him to have the Exactor intercept the ship; the two then returned to the Star Destroyer. As Vader interrogated Bioto, Appo learned that two humans had been found in one of the Ringer's smuggling compartments. Vader and Appo questioned them, learning they had been hired by Garrulan as a distraction. What they were being distracted from became obvious as Appo learned that a CloakShape fighter was launching from Murkhana and would pass through the space the Exactor had occupied before it had moved to intercept the Ringer. Vader prepared to go after the CloakShape in his own personal starfighter and had Appo select his wingmen. He ordered the commander to destroy Garrulan's ship when the crime lord attempted to flee Murkhana. Vader was unsuccessful in his mission, though, and the fugitive Jedi escaped to hyperspace in the CloakShape. Garrulan was killed shortly thereafter.

Appo returned with Vader to Coruscant, later accompanying him when Palpatine sent Vader to the Jedi Temple in search of Sith holocrons. Armand Isard, father of Ysanne Isard, and a crew of technicians came too, on their own mission, only to detect that Shryne was accessing Temple records from a remote site. One of Isard's technicians traced it to a moon of Jaguada, and Appo relayed information on the location to Vader, including the fact that an Imperial garrison was present on Jaguada. Vader had Appo order the garrison commander to pursue Shryne and his cohorts. The Jedi escaped nonetheless; Appo had the garrison find all possible hyperspace vectors for their ship, but they were unsuccessful in catching it.

Later in the year, Vader and Appo's search would not be thwarted for long, though. Former Senator Fang Zar of Sern Prime, who had opposed Palpatine's rise to power, had thwarted Imperial orders to remain on Coruscant and fled the planet, finding refuge with Bail Organa on the planet Alderaan. When Palpatine learned that Zar had been in contact with a crime lord on Murkhana to arrange for passage off Alderaan, he concluded that Zar's escape plan was tied to Vader's Jedi fugitives and sent Vader to deal with Zar. Appo and his stormtroopers accompanied Vader on his shuttle to the planet's surface and stood by as Vader ordered Organa to turn over Zar. Organa prepared to comply, but they soon learned that Zar had fled his quarters. Vader sent Appo in pursuit of the former senator and headed off on his own to find Zar, while Organa dispatched his men with the same goal. Vader reached Zar first and executed him as the senator attempted to flee.

Though Vader encountered Shryne on Alderaan, the Jedi escaped yet again; Palpatine soon informed Vader that Shryne and the party of Jedi survivors that he had gathered were headed for the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk. Some weeks later, Vader and Appo traveled to that world in the Exactor. Vader met with Governor Wilhuff Tarkin aboard Tarkin's ship Executrix; there, Tarkin informed Vader that the Jedi ship had been spotted arriving on Kashyyyk, then told Vader of the plan that he and Palpatine had devised. Tarkin would use the presence of Jedi on Kashyyyk as a pretense to invade the planet and enslave the native Wookiees as enemies of the Empire. Appo and Vader supervised the initial part of the invasion from the bridge of the Exactor; the commander summoned the officers in charge of the various theaters of battle to meet with the Dark Lord, then joined them as Vader briefed the group. Once the officers were clear on their duties, Vader and Appo descended to the surface of Kashyyyk to take on the Jedi. As they landed, Vader was informed over the comm by one of the officers that the Wookiees were fleeing into the safety of Kashyyyk's forest and would soon become impossible to root out. Appo suggested that they initiate surgical orbital bombardments to flush the Wookiees out, and Vader gave the order to do so.

When the shuttle touched down, Appo and his stormtroopers rushed out, Vader right behind them. A heavy firefight with the Wookiees ensued, and several of Appo's stormtroopers fell. Vader dealt with the Wookiees and waved Appo forward, only to have several of the Jedi fugitives step out and meet them in combat, some engaging Vader and some Appo. As Vader killed those attacking him, the Jedi fighting Appo withdrew and set their sights on the Dark Lord, only to be slain in turn. At last only Olee Starstone remained, and Vader ordered Appo and his men to leave her to him and deal with the last few surviving Wookiees. A new ship arrived next to the stormtroopers, though, with Roan Shryne on board. Shryne used the Force to pull one of the fallen Jedi's lightsabers to him, and with it he decapitated Appo.
