Description Quick how-to guide I threw together for a friend who wants to learn acrylics. This was done digitally, for the sake of speed, but is the same technique I use when painting with acrylics, so it works in either digital or traditional mediums.

If you're working in traditional paint, once you have the hang of color mixing you won't have to work in layers like this. After the first two steps are done and dried, you can have all the colors you'll be using premixed on your palette and brush them on in rough swatches that you then blend together. Though there are a few advantages to working in layers. While it is slower (because you have to wait for each layer to dry), it can allow you to bring the whole painting up together, instead of working one object at a time, and can give your colors a greater depth and vibrancy than the swatch-and-blend method - especially if you're working with semi-translucent paints where the light will catch the layers of color underneath.
